Laurel Ridge - BOM 2025 - Month 1 - Four Patch in a Star

Month 1 of the Grandmother's Autumn colorway and the Granddaughter's Spring colorway. This month you will be making Four Patch in a Star blocks.

If you are using your own fabrics, we recommend that you download the patterns from the Grandmother's Autumn colorway to use as your guide.

The Forum has tips from other TQS members making this quilt and posting their progress.  Be sure to download and print the patterns each month - even if you are not making the quilt.

Laurel Ridge  patterns are available to all Star Members and will only be available on the The Quilt Show site through 2025. After that, no pattern downloads will be available.

Quilted since 2007. Somewhere in the middle of that timeframe, I quilter that told me she started quilting when she was80. And she did beautiful quilts so I ask her what was your secret to such great points and triangles and she said Starch...

Quilted since 2007. Somewhere in the middle of that timeframe, I quilter that told me she started quilting when she was80. And she did beautiful quilts so I ask her what was your secret to such great points and triangles and she said Starch baby. Is the ironing board cover looks terrible and you have to clean the iron once a week, get over it. I have been doing that more or less ever since, especially on bias edges before I cut them. I wash all of my quilts afterwards I like the way they puff up. Even if it’s gonna hang on the wall, it’s OK with me. OK that’s my two cents. I’m out of here.

I have purchased the Hearthstone fabrics separately and not in the kit. I would appreciate knowing the fabric names you are using in each block. For month 1, Golden Tiles are used in both blocks. Are we using Parchment Blue or Parchment Cream?...

All the fabrics are shown and listed by name in the Fabric Requirements file. The exact same photos are used there as in the Monthly patterns.

It is tough to be slightly handicapped and over age 75. Help, please. It is a little more work for you and I appreciate the extra effort it would take to name each fabric. I am probably not the only quilter who is not as young as I once was.

I strongly advise starching prior to cutting as shrinkage can be a factor.

I was wondering since we changed from doing the center to doing random blocks. We make these blocks and then hold them all until month 12, and then we will be told where to place them and put the quilt together? I am confused on this part?

I tried your suggestion about starching the fabric before cutting for more accuracy and I was so happy with the outcome. I will never not starch again! My question is how much fabric do I starch? I can see starching everything before sewing if my quilt is totally pieced but, on this project, I don't know if some of the fabric will be used as background. Also, do you prewash fabric and then starch or just starch as the fabric comes from the store. Thank you very much. I look very forward to more tips!

I’m looking forward to doing this I love Quilts and have lots of blocks and 220 is a great way to get your block going, and I appreciate the fact of you telling us the best way to organize ourselves for the next year.
I do have a question I am wondering if you can show us exactly which stars are working on at what time because I think you’re working on your granddaughter one and it’s not the same colours as the grand mother one I am using my own stash and wanna make sure I am using the right areas. Since you are using your own fabrics, you will have to decide on the placement of your blocks once they are completed. The four-patch in a star blocks radiate out from the center of the quilt.
