2025 - Laurel Ridge
Our 2025 Block Of the Month, Laurel Ridge (approx 90" square) quilt was created by American designer Lynn Wilder. Each month's instructions will include a video by Lynn and supporting live presentations by expert quilter Barbara Black.
If you need help with the BOM, you can visit the FORUM where Barbara Black will answer your questions (it's also a great place to see other people's progress).
Lynn Wilder's Laurel Ridge quilt design pays homage to the courageous women of the 1930s American Depression era who were employed by the newly established Work Progress Administration (WPA) as Packhorse Librarians, the pioneering traveling 'bookmobile'.
These women risked their lives for just $28 a month—facing terrible storms, rising creeks, wild animals, and skepticism towards the written word to deliver books into the depths of Kentucky's hollers and mountains on horseback and mules to bring literacy to these areas.
Lynn says,
“I regard these women as fearless and 'plucky,' committed to bettering the lives of their families and those impoverished and illiterate. Their bravery is commendable, and their tale deserves to be shared.”
The Hearthstone and Laurel Ridge fabric collections used in the quilts represent two generations of women—a grandmother and her cherished granddaughter—bonded by their love of quilting.
The Grandmother's Autumn colorway showcases Lynn's Hearthstone Collection from Marcus Fabrics, featuring rich, warm tones that echo the natural beauty of flat stones around a woodland cabin hearth.
The Granddaughter's Spring colorway (shown below) showcases Lynn's Laurel Ridge Collection from Marcus Fabrics, capturing the vibrant spring flowers and warm days spent learning to quilt.
