Pick a Petal - BOM 2024 - Month 07

Check out several of the Alex Anderson Live sequences on this site. She has addressed embroidery several times, including in the recent wool applique segment. She refers to a few of her favorite embroidery books. Bonus for left-handers: Alex is left-handed, so you can watch the way you need to.

I too am stuck -- I have very little embroidery experience on toweling but none on a quilt but did purchase the threads thinking I would get some direction and now I don't know how to use them. I put in many hours thus far making the blocks and now I'm concerned that I will ruin the quilt by charging ahead -- really would like to have more direction from the experts.

Personally I don't use stabilizer on embroidery unless it is very dense. Learned to embroider on pillow cases as a child and nothing was ever used on those. Thus the pictures are usually sufficient for me. Whenever I have a question that doesn't appear to be answered in the instructions on most any project, my go to is you tube! There I usually find multiple solutions to what ever my question.

If you go to Barbara Black's blog, she has links to several videos with embroidery tutorials. I agree the instructions from Jen are fairly minimal, but I wasn't surprised. I did her design "Long Time Gone" with Dee Christopher on the Saturday Sampler in 2021. Dee gave us great suggestions and instructions, as Barbara is doing for this quilt.

I've thoroughly enjoyed completing a couple of excellent Quilt Show BOMs over the years, (Wendy Williams' instructions were fabulous), this one is very light on for direction / instructions. While I've had no issue working on this BOM, (which I'm making for a friend in the late stages of cancer), I would have expected at least a mention of embroidery thread / needle suggestions, and options for stabiliser / hoop etc just to consider if nothing else, especially given the BOMs are usually designed for a broad skill level.
