Block of the Month
2025 - Laurel Ridge
Our 2025 Block Of the Month, Laurel Ridge (approx 90" square) quilt was created by American designer Lynn Wilder. Each month's instructions will include a video by Lynn and supporting live presentations by expert quilter Barbara Black.
If you need help with the BOM, you can visit the FORUM where Barbara Black will answer your questions (it's also a great place to see other people's progress).
Lynn Wilder's Laurel Ridge quilt design pays homage to the courageous women of the 1930s American Depression era who were employed by the newly established Work Progress Administration (WPA) as Packhorse Librarians, the pioneering traveling 'bookmobile'.
These women risked their lives for just $28 a month—facing terrible storms, rising creeks, wild animals, and skepticism towards the written word to deliver books into the depths of Kentucky's hollers and mountains on horseback and mules to bring literacy to these areas.
Lynn says,
“I regard these women as fearless and 'plucky,' committed to bettering the lives of their families and those impoverished and illiterate. Their bravery is commendable, and their tale deserves to be shared.”
The Hearthstone and Laurel Ridge fabric collections used in the quilts represent two generations of women—a grandmother and her cherished granddaughter—bonded by their love of quilting.
The Grandmother's Autumn colorway showcases Lynn's Hearthstone Collection from Marcus Fabrics, featuring rich, warm tones that echo the natural beauty of flat stones around a woodland cabin hearth.
The Granddaughter's Spring colorway (shown below) showcases Lynn's Laurel Ridge Collection from Marcus Fabrics, capturing the vibrant spring flowers and warm days spent learning to quilt.

2024 - Pick a Petal
The 2024 Block of the Month, Pick a Petal (approx 72" square), was created by quilt designer Jen Kingwell. She writes,
I felt incredibly honoured when The Quilt Show approached me to be their next designer and without hesitation, I accepted. Immediately, my mind was brimming with ideas of what to create and my thoughts consistently gravitated towards Spring.
I think Spring is my favourite season.
After the grey days of winter, I get excited for the crisp mornings that shimmer with sunlight & hint at the warmth of Summer fast approaching. My garden begins to explode with vibrant colours and as I watch the butterflies and bees dance among the blooms, I can't help but feel my heart stir with joy and hope.
When The Quilt Show invited me to collaborate, I knew I wanted to capture the essence of Spring by weaving together the beauty and colour that this season brings to my world.
Using a mix of hand piecing, needle-turn appliqué and a range of stitch techniques, I began my journey to create Pick A Petal.
I love the way combining these techniques creates layers of detail and interest to a project. I embellished the appliqué borders with butterflies, flowers, and fruits to further evoke the spirit of spring.
I’m known as a scrap quilter and so I knew I wanted this design to reflect this: The colour palette is bright and fun mixing a range of prints.
I hope you enjoy this journey with me as much as I enjoyed the process of creating this design.
