I am just beginning to cut my fabric. Are we to “overcut”, or cut larger, the squares for the half square triangles so there is enough fabric to trim them down, or does the size designated leave enough room for squaring up?

The pressing instructions for 4-Patch strip sets for the Grandmother blocks indicate the 1st strip set should be pressed away from the center and the 2nd strip set should be pressed towards the center. However, the 4-Patch strip sets for the Granddaughter blocks indicate what 1st strip should be pressed towards the center and the 2nd strip set should be pressed away from the center. I am making the Grandmother quilt and the seams are not interlocking, help!

The two Kit instructions are different because of the light/dark values of the fabrics used in the kits.
The center unit is a 9-patch rather than a 4-patch. The instructions as written does have them nest as the 9 patches are made. Since Lynn presses some seams open, they might not nest as completely as if all seams were pressed to one side.
Simply press your seams as you prefer.

Please forgive my ignorance. I’m a new quilter and the math eludes me. I’d like to make 4 month 9 blocks at 10 1/2”. Do I double the fabric I cut or the unfinished piece? Then I assume I would follow the same directions. Thank you for your help. My goal is to get caught up and I used the coloring page to figure out what I wanted to do.Cheryl R

This is a good block to make 10” finished. It’s a 5 patch so each unit is 2” finished. The four corner squares for example would be cut 2.5”. The half square triangles can be made 8 at a time, enough for 1 block. Lynn provided direct links to her Classroom on The Quilt Show that give excellent instructions for making a variety of units. You will learn a lot there about Basic Quilters Math.
The quarter square triangles instructions are there too. Just remember to determine the FINISHED size of a unit then add seam allowances for the size to cut. But first study Lynn’s EASY PATCHWORK MATH:

The quarter square triangle units Lynn makes with Half Square triangles first, they would be 2” finished for your 10” block, then combining them to make QST. Another way to make them is to cut squares in QUARTERS, from 3.5” squares, then sew the quarter square triangles into the block—2.5 “ with seam allowance, 2” finished.
