    BINDING QUESTIONS

I am told you should sew your mitered corners on your binding... do you sew both front and back? or just the front.... Do you put the excess fabric to the right or to the left of your sewing.

Are there any special or fool proof techniques? My mitered corners never look very good and I want to improve them... NOT SURE WHAT I do wrong with them.

    #2
Alex demonstrated how to do mitered bindings - it's in Season 2, and I think I remember that you need to wait for the DVD's. Anyway, her method works every time. And yes, if you are submitting your quilt for judging, you should sew the corner at both the front and back. My friend recently had hers in the County Fair and got a blue ribbon, but the judge wrote that she should sew the front down, too.

Oh, the dreaded mitred corners of the binding........ I always sew them down on both sides.

But I have to admit that I'm often too lazy and pushed for time and then don't do mitred corners....... (looking around if anybody heard this 'confession of a rogue quilter').......

Sharon Schamber's free video on binding helped me to fix my bindings. She demonstrates the importance of sewing the miters on both front and back and how to do it. The trick is to get the glue bottle tip so you get the right amount of glue down.

I'm glad you mentioned her videos as I watched the binding one last week. Alas, they are out of those nozzles/tips, but neither do I have a binding ready. I want to try it when I can.

Joyce, before they started selling the nozzle/tips on the web site, Sharon did a video showing how to use the tip of a BIC mechanical pencil for a nozzle. She used the 0.05 size, I think, and then used a large size rubber tip (sold in craft/knitting store to protect the end of a knitting needle) to seal off the tip when you aren't using the glue. I did my glue bottle like that, and it's worked great for about a year now! I just checked, but that old YouTube video is no longer available. :?

Hi Joyce....I just received a Clotilde catalog...I shows a liquid bottle set that has four different size tips that can be used for medium-weight glue or paint. You can also check this out on line at "clotilde.com" the cost is $11.98. Don't remember what Sharon schamber asked for the tips. Maybe this will help.. Nan F.
