They were amazing Renata. And while the one that won was lovely it seemed to me to be a maquette for a bigger version which was also on display elsewhere in the show. Some of the other miniatures displayed exquisite workmanship and while I didn't like them all I feel that they could have been acknowledged with an award. It was also surprised that Phillipa Naylor was able to be a judge and win 1st prize in one of the categories. How does that work?
When we came upon this lady - Antonia Hering from the Netherlands - she was pretty cross with the judges comments about her quilt because they referred to the piecing not being good enough. There is no piecing in this quilt it is all appliqué. I think this quilt won a prize at one of the big shows in America last year? But it didn't get placed at all at Birmingham. There are over 7500 perfect circles appliquéd on the piece. And I thought the whole quilt was stunning. Judges

Yes, indeed, Rita, Antonia Hering's quilt, Dreamtime, won first place for innovative applique at Houston in 2012. Anyone who would like to look at it close-up can view it right here on TQS at see-quilts/zoom-quilts/. Close-up, It is amazing!
I have no idea how judging/competing works for an individual. At a minimum it seems that she would have had to recuse herself from judging that entire category to avoid any conflict of interest or perception thereof. Perhaps, someone knows how this works?
I have not had much time to comment on all the photos that have come in on FOQ Birmingham but I want to say that I have enjoyed looking at all the photos and so glad you all had a great time meeting up at the show. I, for one, have enjoyed reading about your visit to FOQ!

More beautiful quilts, Lorna. Interesting how the snow was portrayed in Heart of the Alps. It reminds me of a Japanese woodblock print. I was also intrigued by Balancing Act--the trapunto provides a delicate counterpoint to the colorful plant. Love the way she added the little circles too. All were beautiful, but those two got my attention because of technique. Thanks for posting more pictures!

Rita, I can understand the frustration about some of the judging. My quilt came back with the comments and 'ticks' of two judges. In one category I got and 'excellent' from one and 'needs attention' from the other. Also, one of the judges said that my 'edge treatment, hanging' needs attention. Shaking head and grinning....... Let's just presume that one of the judges had PMT on the day. Last year a judge ticked 'not applicable' for applique and the piece was heavily appliqued. Fortunately I'm totally non-competitive and only put quilts in shows because it makes me actually finish something, and I see something I made hang in public.
