    Houston 2009

    terribly disappointed

My husband and I went to Houston for the Quilt show. He visited a friend and I enjoyed my time at the show.

Tried to book Hilton of the America’s this morning at the appropriate time and was SOLD OUT!

Well the quilters rate is sold out and I can’t afford the higher rates.

Where did you stay when you went to the show. I’ve stayed at the 4Seasons but their not booking yet and I’ve stayed at the Doubletree(too far). Any suggestions?

I've heard about many staying at the Holiday Inn Express MUCH cheaper

I stayed at the Hyatt. It's a bit pricey, but if a couple of people could share a room, it sure would help. The shuttle bus goes to the Hyatt and the only problem I had with it was standing in line to board one night after the show.
      Happy Quilting,

If my husband retires next year, I MAY BE living in Texas. I LOVE Texas and was born there, but my kids and grandkids are here in CA. My sister lives in Katy, TX, so I'm hoping to stay with her or be living near Houston in 2009. I hope you all can find accommodations--there are so many communities a little ways out from Houston--you would need to rent a car, though. Could someone out there tell me what parking at the convention center is like and also about traffic coming into Houston? I live in the Los Angeles area, so nothing scares me!

            How wonderful!!!

Everything in perspective. I was so disappointed in not getting a hotel but so many things have happened some good some bad and in hindsight it was for the best.

First of all the economy is killing us. My DH is self employed and things are not the best in his business. So trying to pay for Houston would have been difficult with meager savings.

Second, and the best part, my dd got married in October - just before Houston 2008 and is now expecting our first Grandchild in late August. So I"m sure having mom around and taking vacation at that time would be beneficial for all.

I guess in the end, it's all for the best. For all of you going, have a blast!

              Judy,
There is a big underground parking garage across the street from the convention center. I'm not sure how much it costs or how fast it fills up. It used to be a surface parking lot. Then three years ago, they dug it up and put a multi-level parking garage underground then built a really cool park with a boat pond, fountains, and an ampitheatre. It is a great park. Last year was the first show with the park done. I can't really tell you much about the traffic because we come into Houston in the mid-afternoon. We stay at the Hilton and almost never take the car out of the garage. During peak traffic times, it is bad, but not as bad as LA. I've been both places at traffic times :x

Denise, you will probably be able to get a room closer to time for the show....I stayed with a dear friend this past year for three nights. But I did stay in the Hyatt on the first night and in the Holiday Inn Express on the last night. I booked both of those rooms only two weeks before the show. So don't give up hope yet!

Brink, I am soooooooooo excited that you are coming to the show...I can't wait to have a hug!

I have always wanted to go to Houston, and this might be the year! My friend and I are hoping to use airline miles before all the airlines go under.

It would be great to meet all of you!

When we went to Houston 3 years ago we stayed in the Marriott Residence Inn, about a 10 minute walk to the convention centre, but they also have a free shuttle. It was very comfortable and worked out very reasonable with 4 of us sharing. The bonus was having a kitchenette to make coffee and snacks whenever we wanted. I wish I could be in Houston this year, it would make a nice birthday present

I am hoping to make it too. I have the airline miles so I probably need to book the flight before those fill up. I have lots of friends in the area, so we'll see I can find one that doesn't mind a house guest.
