Congratulations, Terrie, to you DIL on the publication of Brown Eggs and Jam Jars! What a wonderful book title--made me want to go to Amazon and look it up! She also has a great blog that I might well follow now that you've helped us discover it.

I'll be passing on the FQ swap but if there's anyone who would like to swap mug rugs, I'd be happy to make a few more.

Wendy I don't know where that thread is on the forum but if you make a paste with bicarbonate of soda and water, turn your iron off and allow it to cool slightly before applying it with a wad of cotton batting. You will need to rub it quite a bit but it should come off.

            Hi Wendy,
Here is a link to iron cleaner which I think is brilliant and it's on offer at the moment. " Faultless HOT iron cleaner"

Wendy, if you get a new tumble dryer sheet (like Bounce) and iron over it a few times it takes loads of things off your iron and leaves it lovely and clean with no need for chemicals.

No haven't got any dryer sheets, that sounds easiest. I've tried salt and baking powder and sticky stuff remover. Then acetone followed by toothpaste which got a lot off. I'm feeling a bit heady now on acetone and toothpaste. Husbands taken it off me and disappeared tutting.

If he doesn't fix it I'll try bicarb or dryer sheets then if that doesn't work I'll head to Iceland Anne. It's years of neglect on it but it started leaving brown marks from last fusible accident so I better sort it.

                Thanks for the help.

Wendy, I don't have the link to that thread but I was looking at Sharon Shamber's tutorials on uTube and one was on cleaning irons. She claims all the gunk that gets crusted/burnt onto our irons is water soluble. She recommends sitting the unpluged iron on a wet towel overnight and clean it in the morning. She wipes it off and then uses a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to finish any tough spots. I haven't tried it but what could it hurt. She also keeps a damp Magic Eraser on a wet towel near her pressing area and uses it as she works to keep the iron from getting bad in the first place. She just rubs the hot iron over the eraser.

Sharon's method works much of the time. I also use a product called "Bon Ami" cleanser... doesn't
scratch sole plate.. BYW..I ruined one iron with over cleaner...didn't realize it was cast Aluminun!!

Did it dissolve the aluminium? I've got visions of you with just a handle in your hand.

Lois your tips sound far more attractive than elbow grease I'm going to google Magic Eraser sounds like a 'must have'

I've never had any luck with Magic Erasers working on irons, and they are expensive. (They work great on cleaning spots off painted walls, and for cleaning bathrooms: get the generic kind from Amazon, if possible, and buy in bulk).

Rowenta iron cleaner is a terrific product, too.

"Bon Ami" cleanser....says on the container it is calcium carbonate....and a crocheted scrubbie..
because it is all non-scratch...and that darned elbow grease  Well...usually takes care of
it. Soaking overnite on a wet rag does help..I just don't remember to do it !! :side:

As for the oven cleaner...Well...most say not to use on Al. but I didn't read !! ...it might as well have
dissolved it....totally etched and pitted the sole !! That's when I went to old heavy dry irons !! I have a
Small Rowenta.now...but like most, it sputters and spits and leaked from the water res. when it
was nearly new ! So when it is light color or critical I switch out to a vintage one.

I just use a used fabric softener sheet with the iron hot. I have not had to scrub and it doesn't scratch or ruin the surface of my iron.
