Guess what happened yesterday after I took that picture. I had thrown that thermal blanket up on the
only wall that was accessible to me in my studio but that wall is next to the bathroom where I
wheel my wheelchair up to the sink cupboard to blow dry my hair. Guess what I got - a design
floor after blowing the HSTs off the blanket!

Patti...I think we need to see a picture of that new 'design' floor  . And was the 'design' actually worth keeping???

Hi Pattisure, I want to come help pick up your scattered HST's. You need a gizmo like that pin magnet they are showing on the Daily Blogg only one that picks up fabric squares. Lois Bruno.

Debbie, I blew them off the wall right before I had to leave for work and I thought about waiting for daylight
when I got home at night to pick them up so I could take a funny picture but I knew I wouldn't have time so I
picked them up at that night. Margo at my most disableness times, I have been tempted to get one of those grabbers.
Shoot I'm getting more and more mobile that I even climbed a ladder to put up that blanket - not well and not
straight but I was happy to be able to muttle thru it. Too bad that ugly thing is at a point of focus for the rest of
the condo and not very persentable. I want the use of a design wall more than asthetics, so I'll grin and bear it
and find a fix at a later time.

Patti, I'm really glad to hear that you are getting more mobile, and wish I lived close enough to put up a design wall for you!

hey patti - good for you 8) but presentable is objective - always depends on who is looking and what is most important
and if it really bothers you: next time you have a visitor / delivery boy / neighbor looking in - ask them if they have a moment to give you a hand - most of us love to be helpful - i've found that a grateful smile and a heartfelt thank you goes a long way to making us feel good about helping AND about being helped.

Hey, I'm finally getting around to getting the papers off the HST's. They are pressed and paperless now! I'm starting to trim off the bunny ears. Has everyone been squaring them up and making sure they all are the "right size"? Or are you cutting off bunny ears and trusting the size? It's a lot of HST's to trim!

                      Hi Kath,
I checked every one and squared them. 80% of them were square. Since I am determined to be accurate with this project, I used the 45* line on my ruler to square them and I drew a line on the back where the 1/4 inch stitch line should be for the ones that were a slight bit too small. I could still use them without having them throw off a line of squares.
                      Ginochka
PA Ricky and Alex HST's were exactly 2 1/2 " square, I didn't get one from Edyta.

Hmmm, I don't know why but I didn't even think about checking size and if they were square. I did fine while I was sewing them that I had to "fudge" for some that were cut short; but, overall, I didn't have any problems. I haven't done anything with the batik HSTs yet.

Most of the HST that I received were fine. A few - maybe 3-4 out of 420 - were too small. Unfortunately, these were some of my favorites!
I fused these to Steam A Seam Lite, trimmed them to 2" square, fused these in a tossed way to two of the opposite corners, and machine stitched them down with a blanket stitch.
btw - I had a few HSTs left over and sent them off today to Gina.
                          Best to all

I decided to just square them all, and am trimming them all down to 2 3/8". And like Ginochka, I am using the diagonal line on the ruler. It will take me a bit longer, but I won't get as frustated sewing, and there won't be any "too small" ones. I can use them all. Then I know if something doesn't line up, it is MY sewing!

Thanks, all! I've now been measuring them, noticing that some are too small even if I correct my pressing. I do really want to start out with blocks all the same size, so it looks like I'll be checking each one. Since I only need 508 HST's for my pattern and I have 600+, even after weeding out the duplicate blocks, I'll probably have enough. Some of the smaller ones might be re-stitched if I need to make up the number to 508. My mom is going to inherit the remainder including duplicates, so I might trim those down to the same size so she won't need to do that.

I still remember my quilt from 10 years ago where I was fudging every seam, because my cutting and piecing was so inaccurate. This HST quilt is so special to me, I want it to be well made. Okay, back to the sewing room! Only about 375 to go.
