It's really just a matter of personal taste, but I prefer your first lay-out with the blues and pinks! I think it sparkles more, whereas the last layout looks sort of flat to me.
I like the reds around the edges.
If you like it calmer, you know what to leave out! You will probably notice that it's easier to see where you want to make changes by taking photos of each lay-out.
Aren't digital cameras handy tools!

I think that we see too much of the spaces between the blocks in the actual lay-out, and the camera condenses it all so that it's actually more like the assembled pieces will be.Originally posted by WendyCPAUsing the digital camera is really helpful. I can see some areas where the values are "clumped" together in the random layout! Interestingly, the photo of the random layout appeals to me a lot more than the actual did. Thanks for the feedback!

I have been planning on doing the Medallion quilt since Margo I got Edyta’s book. I just love it. In her book it says if you seem to have more of one color go ahead and put that one to the outside and it will make an invisible border. So after I sorted by HST by color I counted them as I counted the outside border in her photo & saw I needed 52. I found I had 52 in green so that will be my invisible outside border, now I will add the light & medium (alternating I think) triangle at the beginning of each row and lay it out to see what it looks like.
I didn’t think about laying it out by country or State. I was thinking of putting my golden tickets in the center but only got two so I like the idea of maybe putting them to the outside. Good Idea
Thanks,
Barbara

If you look at the photo of the medallion quilt in Edyta's book, it looks pretty scrappy to me. I figure I could plan forever and not get perfect, so will do something way out of my box, just take it as it goes and if something's really out of place move it before I start to sew it together. Too many HST's to sort first then try to place. Right now, I have the layout started on my design wall, and if I want a certain colorway for the outside edge, I have plenty of fabrics and can make more to go there. I'll decide on border fabrics after the center is sewn together. The one thing I was having a little difficulty with is keeping the four sections straight, so I took some string and used pins to run it in an "X" along where they divide from the center out for reference. It makes it easier to see where they divide into sections.

Any comments on making the 'x' in the quilt in related fabrics and filling the quadrant triangles with shades and hues going from one leg of the 'x' to the other. For example, I have enough blues/purples to make one leg of the x in that colour way. Another is green to tourquise, andanother is purple etc. I tried it on the design wall, and kinda like the idea. It's still scrappy, but with a little order. Or is that trying too hard?
One quilt I really love is Margo's scrappy one with lots of red hsts and solid squares. You can see it on her profile. Good idea if you get lots and lots of one colourway.

Actually....that is the same basic lay-out that I'm using for this exchange!!!
This was the original EQ design I laid out before the exchange got so big. I've since decided to add a pinwheel border since we have so many HSTs! And I've also changed my mind about the text in the border. We are allowed to change our minds, aren't we???

Yay!! I love your quilt idea and am encouraged to do similar with mine. Thanks for the input, Margo. It must be the vibes from the sisterhood. Glad you have the EQ programme to show it - I'm using my new design wall - more labour-intensive. (for now - the back of a flannel-backed vinyl tablecloth nailed to my wall. ) I'll try to get a pic up soon. But I am thinking of getting up very early tomorrow morning to watch the Royal wedding, so I may cat-nap during the day! egro - maybe no quilting tomorrow we'll see

I love the Medallion quilt but I accidentally ordered the wrong book. I got the Friendship Strips one. Not that it isn't a great book....it just doesn't have the HST patterns in it. I would order the right one but Hubbby is between jobs. I may try and lay mine out without the pattern. I just can't see if the center block is made up of triangles or a plain square. I will just play around with it and see what happens.
Love Margo's layout too. I would love to have a border with SOTT info in it.
