15242 strips x 1.5 inches /2 strips per width /36 inches= 317.5 yards of fabric! WOW! That is a LOT! Did I do my math right?

    Comment

      That math is correct -

There are 48 1 1/2" x 20" strips in a yard - so you can divide the total number of strips by 48 and you've got the yardage -- scary isn't - if there are 15 yards to a bolt that equates to over 21 bolts of fabric cut up so far in these bags

I've finished cutting my strips but have a question for my fellow strippers. Are you concerned about prewashing batiks? I'm a pre-washer and find that batiks often do bleed.

Starting on page 21 of the Batiks-R-Us exchange there is a discussion about washing batiks:

I would also like to add that as a result of my quilt experience over the weekend, I have been washing every batik I own. Some of the pieces I had already cut into 2" strips for a project. I used the gentle cycle in the wash and a regular dry cycle. I am now using the 2" strips in my project. They did not unravel sufficiently enough to prevent their use in my quilt. As a matter of fact, I was AMAZED at how little they did unravel! I am pairing them with my background fabric, a freshly cut strip of fabric, also cut at 2". There are a few of the washed pre-cuts that are not quite that 2" width, so I'm lining up the left side of the strip with the strip below it, which I know to be a true 2", and am stitching my seam on the right. That way, that little bit of discrepancy is being hidden in my first seam allowance, and will cause me no problems with the remainder of the piecing.

My strips are all cut and in the envelope. Email Barb and now I can set back and wait. I also appreciate all the work that must be involved with sorting all these strips. Thanks, Barb!!!

                      Barb,
Thanks for the eye candy pictures. Seeing all of the colors together gives me something to create from. I'm taking a class from Rita Hutchens in a couple of weeks: Totally Tubular. I may try her method with the strips if I can use 1 ½“wide and still get the elongated triangles or diamond shapes to work out.

Oh, Barb! The volume of the 'good goods' is daunting. When I caught up with you for a few minutes at the Dallas show you mentioned that there was lots of green - no black and white. At my house there is very little green (no black and white there either.) Amazing that you're seeing little duplication. We're all in for a real treat. Now, trying to separate all of that by color? My eyes blur and I bow to your stamina. Thanks so very much.

I still need to buy a few more fat quarters to finish up my strips. I was glad to see the pictures, now I will try to find some different colors. Maybe some blacks and whites. The colors are beautiful. Thanks for all you are doing. I have not worked with batiks before and am getting very excited to begin.

My strips are in the mail. They came from the Shop Hop sponsored in Vermont. Barb - In my envelope is a FQ for you to keep as a thank you for coordinating this daunting effort.

I just sent in my 200 strips today. Just because I had to know.....I figured out that these 200 strips equalled over 4 yards of fabric. What fun!
Thanks again Barb for this fabric exchange.
