Well done Wendy - it really looks happy. Damn it but I wish I had thought of doing that around the edge of the one I have just made for my son's form teacher as a Christmas present. Could have saved me some time which I am rapidly running out of to get myself organized for Christmas. Still don't even have the Christmas cake made.

Here it is - she's a maths teacher:

I took the photo last night so the colours are not accurate. I was going to take one today l but it is such a dark wet and windy day that we have all the lights on anyway. Oh well, at least it's not too cold.

Rita, I remember one year that we made the cake on the 23rd, I made & applied the almond paste on christmas eve, but it didn't get iced (by my big sister) until christmas morning. At least the icing wasn't too hard to cut into

Well actually Rosemary, I have ended up with that scenario too... more than once. ops:

Like I said, at least the icing isn't so hard that you need a hammer & chisel to get into it

Luv your original shapes Rita! I'm sure the teacher like it will too!

Love what you did with the Maths quilt, Rita! I especially like the middle flower. Very pretty!

Hope you get the Christmas cake done! I don't enjoy cooking so I don't do much beyond making healthy dinners and snacks for my dog. But my sister loves to cook so I look forward to going to her house for Christmas to enjoy all of her wonderful creations! That is her creative outlet.

My mind went directly to the food part of your message, Rita. LOL. BTW I do like your little quilt too. I noticed that you used different shapes. Nice touch! Merry Christmas, everyone!

Here in UK it is a rich fruit cake (my mother says that the way to stop the cherries from sinking to the bottom is to make sure that there is plenty of other fruit to stop them - the cake mixture is just there to hold it together  ) Some people are really organised and make them about 4 months ahead and then feed them sherry or brandy, about 1 tsp per week. It is then covered with almond paste or marzipan and then royal icing, which if given long enough to dry becomes very, very hard & crunchy.

Here in Yorkshire fruit cake is served with a piece of strong cheddar cheese, and I have to admit that the flavours work really well together.

Finally got my christmas puddings in their pudding bowls for cooking this weekend just gone, but left one in the pressure cooker too long and it boiled dry ops: I now need a new valve for the pressure cooker, and it is just as well that I make more than one pudding at a time too since it had been a plastic heatproof bowl (but not that heatproof!)

We call that fruitcake and we make it at Christmastime too! We make it without the almond paste and icing. My sister-in-law makes it for the entire extended family. Ours has lots of dried fruit and nuts in it too. She feeds it with brandy. Yum!
