I'm with Marilyn! Hand sewing through all those fused layers is tough!!

I haven't done beading before, and here's what else I learned with lesson 5.

Lauren recommends using a big eye beading needle, so I went and bought a package. I thought I had gotten a bad package, 'cause I couldn't find the eye! Turns out that the entire shaft if these needles are actually the "eye" for the thread and both ends are pointed to slip through the fabric! I was concerned that the flimsy needle shaft wouldn't penetrate the layers, but it was actually easier to do than using the needle with the heavy decorative threads that came in the embellishment kit. Also, I quickly learned that because both ends of the needle are pointed, it's a good idea to avoid pushing from the end of the needle!

I am not really an embellishment kind of gal, and even though Alvin always said that "quilt shouldn't rattle" I know he would have liked this because his favorite color was "bright shiny objects" and there is lots of bling in these little do-dads!

I also quickly learned that these little things roll! And spill!! And drop! And hide!!! Ohmygosh! I can only imagine what the vacuum will sound like when I get around to doing that one day!

But...the job is done, and I'm glad I tried all these new tricks. Thanks to Lauren for a fun class!

Margo it looks great. I love the way everybody's is slightly different. Your basket weave on the silk is sooo good. I had never seen a big eye needle before so I found a tutorial on youtube which demonstrated it. Another thing for the Santa Wish List.

Beautiful Margo, I'm blinging mine now so should be done soon and I agree with your pain sewing through the fusibles.

        It's a really nice quilt you've made.

Beautiful, Margo! I too love the basket weave as well as what to me looks like happy clouds quilted into the square with the words "quilting" in it. But what I like particularly about yours is how the colors really pop.

Everything about yours is wonderful, Margo! I love the colors, the quilting and all of your bling! It was worth the effort that you put into it!

I am just now getting to this project. I was off visiting for a week but prior to that I did get the Introduction prep done - I constructed the background. I prepared the applique pieces for fusing and cut them out. Then today, my first day back home, I just had to do something in my sewing room and did most of the first lesson. I reviewed the video and noted, primarily because of Marilyn's coment about stitching through the tough adhesive, that Lauren does recommend using a fusible meant to be stitched through. Does anyone know what fusible that might be? Unless I got one by accident I am going to have to struggle with the stitching just like the rest of you. Sometimes it pays to toddle along behind. Ofcourse, I can't change mine now that its fused. Pictures to come later.

lois...I think most of the "lite" fusibles are meant to be sewn thru...howsomeever....some are softer than others
for handwork...I try to use as little as I can get by with...you just have to go by trial and error. !

Hi Lois - I used Steam-a-Seam 2 Lite. I expected it to be difficult to sew through, but I actually didn't have any problems. I felt like it was because the needle that came in the kit was so sharp. I really like the needle she gave us!

That's what I used to but it was where there was a double layer it was so tough.
