The 2009 BOM quilt is so fantastic--I walked by it every time I came to the show floor just to see it and admire it.
I'll be using Civil War reproduction prints with little shirtings for background. It would be stunning in Batiks with Black background as well, or 30's fabrics, or purple/orange/lime, or chocolate brown and bubblegum pink, or... Oh, you get the point. And, BTW, Margo's quilt is also to die for--I got to see a photo--and she is a dear heart, just like you've all thought she is--it was so nice to meet her and several of our other TQS'ers though I never got to the 1 p.m. gathering.
Sue, it was great to meet and talk with you--thank you so much for your splendid generosity to TQS!
Can't wait to get started on this new quilt.

Sue's directions finish the top at 82-1/2". But...there are so many pieces that your finished quilt may be a little different. The awesome thing about Sue's directions, I think, is that she has all these "floater" strips so that if your piecing winds up a different measurement, she tells you how to compensate for it to make the next row fit! None of mine were spot on, but the strips made it all fit together just fine!
There are alternate blocks for those who don't want to do the really complicated piecing, and I will also post some alternate directions in case you don't want to do the paper piecing. This was my first PP project, and although I don't especially care for dealing with the paper removal, I must admit that it is a really accurate way to build a block. I would not try the feathered star without the paper piecing! I had never made one before, but it fit together beautifully!

I just got a note from Alex saying that it was OK to post the photo of my 2009 BOM, so it is now on my profile. I apologize for the photography....I just can't get the colors to be true, but maybe you can get an idea of what it looks like. I'm really looking forward to seeing what combinations everyone comes up with!

Okay, we are not busy enough at work. I have been mulling over my color palette for 2009. I am thinking of doing black/grey/white with splashes of red (since a little girl I have always like the look of grey with red). So I started studying the photo to see where the main focus fabric would be used. From the best of my analysis, it looks as if there is the main medallion (feathered star) surrounded by 5 pieced borders, along with the filler or floater strips. So does this mean that we will be getting a "block" every other month? Gosh, I hope I haven't unraveled a big secret.

LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! LOVE IT!! Thanks so much, Margo, for posting your quilt (and TQS for allowing it!).....two of the reasons I can't wait to do this project with the BOMettes is all the support from you and Sue for these gorgeous creations.....no more lurking for me, I'm diving in! Nancy

Wow Margo -- your quilt left me speechless. It is fantastic, and after really looking at the detail of it, I now know that I will not be able to do this one. It is way too complicated for me. Just thinking about the selection of fabrics makes my head spin. I sure will enjoy watching everyone else do this beauty though.

I'm able to do it all because I am blessed with time and an understanding husband! But I've got to tell you that after spending a few days with Sue Garman, I feel like a real slug! The quantity and quality of her work is nothing short of mind boggling!Originally posted by dogquilterWow! Great job on the BOM and you are quick too. I don't know how you do all you do.
Are you going to be doing another quilt along with us?
I am getting ready to start another Stars For A New Day quilt for my niece using the alternate simplified blocks, and I will be posting tips and photos of both quilts each month next year if anyone is interested.

JoJo[/quote]NO, NO, NO...JO JO!!! YOU CAN DO THIS!! I PROMISE!! All it takes is the desire to put in the time. This is definitely not a "Quilt In A Day" project, but it is broken down into managable segments. And if you really don't want to tackle all the little pieces, Sue gives alternative block designs that are much easier and quicker to put together. Please reconsider! I had never attempted anything this complicated before either, but I've got to tell you that I LOVED working on this project. Everything went together so well because Sue's directions are so explicit, and she walks us through each step!Originally posted by ladyquilterWow Margo -- your quilt left me speechless. And you don't have to use 50 different fabrics! It would be beautiful in just TWO! Imagine a red and white quilt! It would be awesome!

Wow, Margo, thanks for showing us your quilt! I love the colors you chose. When you mentioned medium and small scale florals as focal fabrics, I thought of a box of Robyn Pandolph fabrics I've been saving for a special project. This is it!
