Wow! Annis, your tiny blocks are amazing!! Diane, good idea about the Stable Stuff -- think I'll try that, too. And Geneva, have a wonderful fabulous trip! We'll all want to see photos when you get back!

I know it's gotten lost in the shuffle, but there are a couple of ideas about starching in this forum topic including a couple of ways to make your own:

Annis, I am in awe! And I love all of those little left over HST! I was keeping back one of every combination HST that I have made for the big exchange, and BECAUSE OF YOU, they have now been cut in half, then halved again. You have inspired me to think mini for a furure project! I'm loving it!

I haven't cut any yet but still plan on doing so. Now that I hear we're getting some signed blocks there may be a few I won't be able to cut. I was wondering how they would fit on my quilt, then remembered the border so they will go at each corner. Alex on the top left because she's left handed, Ricky on the top right, Edyta on the bottom left and I guess I will have to sign one of my own for the bottom right since I'm making the quilt. If I get any more signed ones I will have to get more creative with the border.

I spent hours today, cutting fabric for the lattice border. I cut and cut and cut. Then I practiced sewing a few together. As I have not paper pieced in years.....I proceeded to sew a few backwards....I folded a couple underneath each other, accidentally sewing THOSE to each other.....and on and on. I think I threw out a total of about five...but I did finally get the hang of it. I sewed a total of about 20+ squares...........YIPPY!!!! However, it took me most of the afternoon...oh my. There is always tomorrow!

I just took a second look and the seams on my lattice border are twirled the same way as Margo's. My mistake. I was thinking counterclockwise but was looking at the front side of the block, not the back. I'm getting a lot done on the computer on these icy days, but I'd rather be sewing. Maybe I will find time this weekend.

I made starch last night. I used the boiling of water and adding cornstarch to that. I will try it today. Thank you for the help!

I have a question: On lattice border, when I sew paper-pieced blocks together, should I place them in certain colour order or just randomly? I will use different fabrics than original patterns though.

Place the lattice however YOU want it!! On Sue's version, and both of mine they are just randomly placed until they looked pleasing.

If you want to do a color thing with them, you might try something like I did with the flying geese units in the 2009 BOM Stars for a New Day.
