BOM-essentials. I've just now started to prepare my fabric to wash and get started on my BOM. 1. I have noticed a number of problems with ALL my fabrics that really baffles me. ALL of them are frayed all along the cut edges. It reminds me when I used to wash my material without first zigzagging on the edges. The edges would get terribly frayed, and some areas fabric balls because so many threads tied together. It has taken me a while to cut all the threads and then I could zig zag the edges to now wash. 2. On my 8 yds of white, all over in various places there are small dots which remind me of splashes of brown dye. They do not come out. I did ask about this when I received my kit. I did not get a reply, but then again I did say I thought I could work around the dots. 3. On my Dk Yellow Green, 2 1/4 yds, about a scant 1/4 inch from the edge there is a 1/8 strip all along the fabric length that is void of color. Just white. 4. On one of my pinks the sides are both cut as if two BIG scallops. The cut is not straight, but comes in all halfway down the length, and then comes back out. Isn't this all very strange? It reminds me of "seconds" material. I'm going to try to make all this work out and I hope I have enough material. I absolutely LOVE this quilt and am excited to start it. Has anyone else experienced any problems?

Jeri, I got the beloved beauties kit and all of the fabrics were in good shape, with cut edges at the ends of the pieces. I have one of the stripes that had a tiny *(8" long) white stripe near the selvage but i worked around that. Hopefully someone will be able to help you out on this one!

Margo Quilters are never alone there is always someone there to help!! we love to show everyone what to do.

You are an exceptional non professional instructor and usually they are the best ones cause you speak our laymens terms..

I feel that I got an added bonus with your notes and experiences on how to put this lovely quilt together and we (a hope that this is okay) all appreciate all the time and effort you have put into these added instructions...knowing that it takes away from your quilting time.

        thanks again Deb

Question for Margo. I have been using your method of stable stuff. I really like it but I have a question. What process do you use, and when do you use it, to remove the stable stuff and glue? Do you spritz, soak. Do you do each block before putting together or do you wait until the whole quilt is done and then wash.

I apologize if you have shown this before, I must have missed it.

I'm not Margo, but on my miniature quilt I soaked the sections before assembly. It took a lot of soaking to get the glue out. On my Christmas one I will wait until the quilt is finished. I suppose you could do it either way.

Joann, Annis is absolutely right. You can do it either way. Personally, I like to leave the starch and glue in place until the entire quilt is quilted and bound.... but I don't do any hand quilting. Then I wash it (more than once if necessary) to get all the chemicals out. I also use Crayola WASHABLE MARKERS to mark my quilting designs, and that needs to come out too.

I soak the completed quilt in cool/cold water for at least 15 minutes then spin that water out of the quilt. I re-fill it with fresh warm water and a mild detergent and rinse with cool water.

I like Orvus Paste which I purchase in bulk from the local farmer's co-op!

I repeat the wash if the quilt still feels stiff after blocking and/or drying.

BTW....the Stable Stuff stays in the finished quilt! It softens into loose fibers that give a very slight filled look to the applique, which I really like! It's not at all stiff like trapunto can be, just a slight fullness.

                  Hope that answers your question!

Better late than never. . .with Robin Gold's encouragement to just start the project when I could fit it in to JoJo's (AKA ladyquilter) hands on tutorial with stable stuff hints, here is month one!
