SOLUTION for PURPLE SPICEBERRY TRIANGLES

    SOLUTION for PURPLE SPICEBERRY TRIANGLES

For those with the Autumn Kit who are unable to cut eight 5.5" squares from Purple Spiceberry, here is a solution.

The 5'5" squares, when paired with a background fabric, make EIGHT QST units, also called Hourglass Blocks. Four are required for each NINE PATCH STAR BLOCK so each pair of 5.5" squares make units for TWO of the 16 blocks needed.

FOUR SQUARES cut 2.5" of Purple Spiceberry and the Background fabric will make EIGHT QST--the same as ONE 5.5" SQUARE of both fabrics.

If you are short ONE 5.5" SQUARE, cut TWO SQUARES 2.5" and work with those. There is a little less to trim but THIS IS STILL OVERSIZED so you can "Trim to Perfection".

If you are short TWO 5.5" squares, cut FOUR SQUARES 2.5" and work with those.

The attached photos use PAPER instead of fabric, a cheap and easy way to test measurements in advance.

I did not see this earlier. I pieced together and now have a seam in 2 of the hourglass blocks where it shouldn't be. I am not concerned as I will not see it from a distance. However I was concerned if I would be needing more of this fabric in month 10 or 11.
I am also confused with the tutorial as the instructions for the finished size of the half square triangles before you make the hourglass ⌛️ pieces and why they look like they are not the same size when added to the block.

I am disappointed as I bought the kit !

Imay be able to do what you said with the purple but what do I do about fabric A????

Thank you, sweet Terri! I am happy to help as I think in numbers. And not everyone does and that’s okay.

I managed to get all 16 blocks using my purple fabric…. this is all I have left over (4.25x1.5”)…. way to close for me. Maybe Lynn or whoever puts these kits together might want to consider increasing the amount of fabric for the purple and red used in appliques that was short for any future kits. Hopefully no purple in remaining blocks! ugh. Maybe next time give us a size to cut for appliques and size for future blocks (ex. Save 5.5” WOF and (1) 5.5” block for future block). Difficult to determine best way to cut fabric for appliques when no idea how much of that fabric is planned for a future block.

I agree about purple fabric..I hope it won’t be needed in any other blocks…why can’t I find LYNN’s video any more? I can’t find it! I love her videos and have never made such precise blocks..

Fortunately, I ordered extra fabric after receiving the Month 2 pattern, mainly because I didn't want to applique and used Barbara's pieced block idea. I'm pleased with the result and as Barbara mentioned, I don't think in the whole scheme of things, using the 2 different fabrics will be noticeable since the value and color are the same. I do agree with Sharon and hope it won't be needed in future blocks.

I have another solution for those that have full WOF. Cut a 5-inch strip and subcut into 8 squares. Follow the directions as written except skip the first the trimming of the HSTs as Barbara suggests in her video. You will still have plenty to trim to perfection on your QSTs. You're starting with a smaller square, but you will still have enough to trim and you will be able to get the 8 squares you need from a single strip.

This “short certain fabrics” thing has caused my anxiety to sky rocket!!! I tell myself “don’t be silly, it’s just fabric”, but still I’m going to have to put the project away for now. This is the second time it has happened. Wouldn’t it be cheaper in the long run to error on the side of too much fabric??? BTW, I’m a relatively new quilter so I’m relying on folks who sell kits and patterns to provide me with the correct information.
