HOUSE ON THE HILL

For this block, I changed a few things on my version "House on the beach"
I removed the chimneys, and I "reversed appliqué" the door and window.

But if you want to make it the same as the original version, here are the cutting measurements:
#24: 2 rectangles 1-1/8" x 2"
1 rectangle 1-1/4" x 2"
2 rectangles 1" x 1-1/4"
1 square (will be cut - but that should be enough) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"
1 square 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"

#5: 1 rectangle 1" x 4"
#1 (door): 1 rectangle 1-1/4" x 2"
#25 (roof): 1 rectangle 1-1/2" x 3"
#21 (sky): 1 square (will be cut) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"
3 squares 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
2 squares 1" x 1"
1 rectangle 1" x 1-1/2"
#19 (chimney and window) 2 squares 1" x 1"
1 rectangle 1" x 1-1/4"

#22 (background) : 1 rectangle 2" x 4-1/2"

If you decide to make the "house on the beach" as I did- without the chimneys, then you will need:

Sky: 1 rectangle 4" x 1-1/2" (for the top portion)
1 square 1-1/2" x 1-1/2 (for the triangle on the right of the roof)
1 square 2-1/2" x 2-1/2 (for the triangle on the left of the roof)
Roof: 1 rectangle 3" x 1-1/2"
Front of the house: 1 rectangle 2-1/2" x 2"
1 square 1-1/2" 1-1/2" (for the triangle on the right hand side - next to the roof)
1 square 2-1/2" x 2-1/2 (for the triangle on the left hand side - next to the sky)
Side of the house: 1 square 2" x 2"
Beach : 1 rectangle 4" x 1" (at the bottom)

Make the roof unit: place the 1-1/2"squares on each side of the roof, just as the instructions for the full size, and sew on the diagonal. Cut the excess fabric and press towards the roof. Make the HST unit using the 2-1/2" squares (one sky and one front of the house). Cut the HST to 1-1/2", and sew to the roof unit on the left, making sure the house front fabric match.
Then add the sky rectangle on top.
"Build the house" - sew the front rectangle(2-1/2" x 2") with the side square (2" x 2"). Sew this unit to the roof unit, making sure the seams from the house and the roof will match. Then, using your favorite method, make the reverse appliqué for the door and window. I decided where I wanted them, cut some steam-a-seam about 1/8" larger and fused in place. Then I cut the hole leaving the 1/8 fused, and fused the chosen fabric. Then blanket stitch.
Add the beach - sew the 4" X 1" rectangle at the bottom.
Add the background fabric on the left side. I placed the right leg of the "h" at 1/4" from the seam, and 1/4" from the bottom of the house.

Thanks again Andree for your wonderful instructions and for taking the time to post them for us use. I did manage to piece these two blocks it was not easy and the result not perfect but I did enjoy the challenge. I have tried to post a photo on the show and tell but google chrome will not let me for some reason ??? I will try again later .....

EIGHT HANDS AROUND

Block Size (finished) 4" x 4"

For this block, we need 2 sets of 4 flying geese - small and large. Since the regular size small one can become the half-size large one, we will cut the fabric the same size for both (the smallest measurement).
So, for the "small" flying geese, we need 4 "blue" squares 2-1/4", and 1 "off white" square 3-3/4".
For the "large" flying geese, we need 4 "purple" square 2-1/4" and 1 " "off white" square 3-3/4" .

From the "off white", we need 4 squares 1".

We also need to make HST. The finished size will be 1-1/2". So, 2 squares of each color (blue and off-white), measuring 2-1/4" (that should be enough).

Then the background for letter "e" - instead of cutting it small, I leave it at 3 inches and center the letter "e at 50%". It is easier to appliqué with a good amount of fabric around (for me anyway!). Once it is appliquéd, center the ruler on the 3/4" mark on the center of the "e", and cut a 1-1/2" square.

Make the Flying geese and HST as per instruction. The first "round" - next to the letter - the flying geese need to be cut 1" x 1-1/2". On the second "round", the flying geese need to be cut 1-1/2" X 2-1/2".
The HST need to be cut 1-1/2" square (I already said that...)

Panel Size (finished) 4" x 7"
Block size 4" x 3"

Cutting instructions:

Background: 4 squares 1" x 1" (around the body)
1 rectangle 1-1/2" x 2" (between the legs)
2 squares 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" (each side of the legs)
2 rectangles 1" x 2-1/2" (each side of the body)
1 square 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" (background of Sun and letter)

Lamb body : 1 rectangle 2-1/2" x 3-1/2"
Lamb legs (not very meaty!) 2 rectangles 3/4" x 1-1/2"

The rest of the fabric is all for appliqué, so the quantity required for each color of your choice...

Just a little warning: When I print the appliqué page at 50%, there is a seam allowance added to each side of the sun, but it is not 1/4" anymore... you have to make up for that:




So when you have the "right side" of this page printed, for your placement, you need to trace a line 1/4" parallel to the dash line (which is the seam line), and you will align your background fabric on that drawn line:

Well--I think by now you know that I have a difficult time following a pattern. So, on my "J" block I decided to do a block called "Jack's Delight". It is from the book by Jinny Beyer--"The Quilter's Album of Patchwork Patterns". This block would have been a delight but I was trying to draft a grid of six on a four inch block--we are talking 32ths and I will tell you, it was questionable whether or not it was going to fit together and be the size it needed to be. So, here is the picture of what I have done so far:
