Desert Island Disks anybody?

I don't know if you used to have that programme on US (or other countries') radio. It was very popular here in the UK. Wellknown people were invited and had to imagine that they were stranded on a desert island. What would be their favourite music to take with them? They could also pick their favourite book (the Bible would be provided) and one luxury item (Husbands are not classed as a luxury and must stay at home). So, what three music CDs would be top of your list? Which book don't you want to live without? And what's the 'luxury' that you would never leave behind?

And we should presume that Lilo will provide us all with a goody bag containing some of Ricky's hand dyes, a couple of his music CDs, Some of Alex's books and fabrics from her latest ranges, plus a basic sewing kit. And remember, there won't be any electricity for the new Bernina.

To start the ball rolling:

My taste in music is very eclectic. It goes from classical to heavy metal, and country to new age. My all time top three cds are: Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos, the music from the film 'Lord of the Rings' (amazingly relaxing), and any of Leonard Cohen's cds, because I just love the way his words and his music melt together.

I studied English at a German university before I moved to England and got stuck here. My English wasn't very good at the time and I struggled with a lot of the literature. Despite my problems I found Thomas Hardy's novels, short stories, and poems fascinating. He always managed to draw me in into his world. So, I'd take his 'Complete Poems' to the desert island with me.

And now for the 'luxury' item: I'd be tempted to say that I want a nice and fast speed boat that runs on solar power so that I can get off that island as quickly as possible. But if that's classed as cheating, I'll take a case of single malt whisky, preferably half from the distillery in Aberfeldy, and the other half with single malts from Isla.

So, what would you take??

LOL, right now my "luxury" would be air-conditioning! I just told DH this morning that I "love" air-conditioning. I am trying to get acclimated to Arkansas' weather (hot & humid!) and I breathe a sigh of relief every time I jump into the AC'd car, home, restaurant, store...you name it!

What a KEWL topic...

For music I would have to say I enjoy all genres, it just depends on who and where I find myself at the time. When driving I listen to contemporary christian. I have found it helps to keep me calm when dealing with the congested roads these days. I also listen to it while machine quilting. somehow my breathiing gets more relaxed with it more than any other genre.

Books, mostly auto biographies, but sometimes a good roamantic novel slips into my hands.

And as for luxury item..An RV. The largest totally state of the art, tricked out & equipped for sewing & quilting that comes complete with a life time card for fuel to just get away, shut the phones off from the working world and be free to be me, lol.

I guess I'd have to have James Galway, because I love flute and he is so amazingly good, Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom, 'cause I'd HAVE to have something to sing along with, and a classical - probably Debussy or Tchaikovsky.

The one book I've already read 2 or 3 times, but could easily read several more because of the scope and sweep of the intertwined families and time frames, is James Michener's Hawaii.

The luxury is acually the hardest. Perhaps a cat or dog, for companionship. Oh, wait - it would have to be a solar-powered laptop with the associated wireless access. Otherwise how could I keep up with TQS?!

For music, I have a variety of tastes: I love country - especially Alan Jackson, George Strait, & Brooks & Dunn. I love Phantom of the Opera. And I love moldie oldies (50's & 60's). And I love Christian praise music. Presently David Baldacci is my favorite reading. I just finished a Christian series by Kinkaide (the painter) and am trying to figure out what to read next.

For the luxury item - I loved the RV idea and the laptop idea. Guess I'm not too creative on my own.

For music, I too am all over the place, so how about a radio?? That way there's lots of choice and someone else is making the decisions! (my brain is too full of quilting decisions!)

Book? Meg Cox's Quilter's Catalog comes to mind! Or perhaps the 70's-era Foxfire books, as they'd help learn all of those basic life-skills we no longer know, like how to build a log-cabin... a REAL log cabin, not the block!! :wink:

And luxury? Can't believe you gals haven't yet said one of Pat's treadle machines!! Or else I might have to take my 99-cent battery powered personal fan (and extra batteries!) b/c I imagine this island is hotter than it is here and I'm having difficulty these days with my own personal climate control :lol:

All of this assuming we're all deserted on the same island together and happily share!! How fun is that???

ROFL..no desert island for me, I luv to travel(though bit it in comfort) and see new places and I also luv to cook so would want my own kitchen. The island would get to claustrophobic for me, but you may find me parked by a nice ocean beach front for a while. The best exercise I have ever gotten is from those sunrise and sunset walks next to the water.

Wow, thought provoking :!: I love the soft rock music from the eighties. "Survivor" is probably my favorite. I also love the more famous classical music (most loved classics) and lastly old favorite hymns (Rock of Ages, The Old Rugged Cross). As far as books go, there are none I don't like. For a desert island, a bunch of mysteries would be great. If I had to name my all time favorite book, it would be "Dear and Glorious Physician" by Taylor Caldwell. The story of St Luke. The luxury item would have to be sewing related. Let's get Bernina working on a solar powered machine. A treadle would work though too.

Mmm, my family never knows what will play in the cd player next, it is always a surprise to them. Lately, I've been rocking out to Amy Grant, but before that was Phantom and Les Mes. As far as a good book, Joseph Garzone's "Joshua" is inspirational. and I can never get tired of reading it. I've read it maybe 4-5 times so far and it never gets old. Now for a luxury item, I like the laptop, RV, and the treadle ideas, but I think it might have to be a "Kindle" from Amazon, I can download whatever book suits my fancy at the moment.

Ladies, thanks for the tips on books to read. I've never read any of Taylor Caldwells. Nor have I heard of Joshua -I looked on Amazon and it looks like a whole series. I think a trip to the library is in order.

I would have to take one of my son's cd's, probably one of the jazz ones. Next would be one of Alan Jackson's cd's(major country fan) and last would probably be Jimmy Buffet, need some good island music. The book would have to be mystery, maybe some Sherlock Holmes to reread. My luxury item would be an air mattress and snugly quilt. I don't like sleeping on the ground. oh...and bug spray I don't like bugs! or spiders! or coconuts! hmmm, maybe I better not get stranded!!

Now I feel really embarassed ops: . I totally missed the desert island thing, but will stand with my response and be happy to keep in touch with all you on the island from my pc in the RV that is parked on the 8) beach looking out to where you might be, LOL.

I would need a sketch book, lots of colored and regular pencils and erasers. My Nickelback CD's (quilters rock!). My little Featherweight. Fabric and a small generator and I'll be set! Sweet solitude!
