All the knitting talk on this thread must have somehow infected my daughter, lol. Katie, who is 7, has suddenly not only picked up the quilting bug (she loves making yo-yos, lol) but now is insisting on learning to knit too. So it was off to Wal-Mart this morning to pick her up a set of knitting needles of her own, some pretty pink varigated yarn, and a little book of diagrams on how to knit. I used to knit years ago, but never really had the passion for it that I had had for crochet and not even close to what I have now for quilting. I'm spending my morning remembering how to do this so I can show her when she gets home today. I only just found out I was taught how to cast on wrong, so I am reteaching myself with Katie's little book. Wish me luck!

How fun! Good luck with learning again while you're teaching Katie  I tried to crochet but it didn't go well... it *really* didn't go well!Originally posted by mandysilkAll the knitting talk on this thread must have somehow infected my daughter, lol. Knowing how 7 year olds have short attention spans and want things they can finish NOW I think I am starting her off on simple little book marks - only casting on 20 or so stitches and making about 5 rows makes a nice little book mark. I made one (not counting relearning time) in about 15 minutes earlier. If it really takes off then we will try a scarf next. 8)
Crochet was my thing before quilting came along. I think I was 8 or 9 when my grandmother taught me the basics and then I was off to the races teaching myself to read patterns. I really enjoyed making ruffley type things like baby blankets, doll dresses, and doilies. Last year I made crochet Barbie gowns for all my neices and even sold one to a lady who watched me making them at dance class for her granddaughter. I don't do it anywhere near as much anymore though because all my time is taken up with quilting now

Left foot is still working wonderfully, though I found that standing at the ironing board is a bit much. I may need to do additional adjustments to my sewing area.
My latest project...

No worries, Kathy! Glad to have you back :-)
Healing is going well. Ortho told me today that I *don't* have a lesion, but it is broken and its slightly displaced. I'm in an aircast - which is very bionic looking  Its a bit sore right now - but thats mainly due to the Dr. poking the sore spot!

Katie kinda gave up real quick, lol  She got making a slip knot but then got stuck with learning to cast on. She just hasn't quite got the hand coordination yet to work both needles. Now she wants me to teach her to crochet instead since it is just one needle, but she has been sick with strep throat and hasn't felt up to doing anything for several days. I was her age when I first learned - I remember making a never ending chain out of grandma's left over yarns  I think we might start trying this weekend. Sarah asked me to make her a scarf though, so I have been a knitting fiend for the last couple of days. Her thread was a very pretty varigated blue, pink, and purple I really like, and I have the scarf about half finished now. I'll post a picture when I finish. I'm finding knitting more enjoyable now than I did in the past so who knows this might be the start of another hobby for me. 8)

I want to learn how to knit socks. I love all the crazy, wonderful wool colors that are out now.
So I'm doing a scarf right now to get myself into the knitting mindset. There's a local yarn shop that has classes, so I'm going to find out when their sock class is.
I know I could probably learn from the web or a book, but I'm very visual and hands on, so I'd rather learn from a person.

I'm the same way, Eileen. When I'm knitting, if I run across a stitch I'm not sure how to do, I google until I find a step by step visual or a video of someone doing the stitch. I can't seem to read instructions and understand them. I need visuals!!!!

Sorry Katie isn't ready to tackle knitting just yet, the needle are pretty long. they need to make smaller ones.Yea,when you haven't picked up the needles in a while it takes abit to remember it all. The ending finished piece got me confused, it took afew minutes to remember how to do it again.
Hope Katie learns crocheting, "before long she will be doing the popcorn stitch". My hands have stayed busy, crocheting, cross stitch.knitting, quilting, painting ceramic suns, alittle bit of everything.
(Good Luck to Katie)

Kathy,
I tried painting ceramics years ago. Never finished the first piece. That's when I started to tell people that I "have the attention span of a gnat"
My daughter and I went to the only yarn shop in our county on Friday. I was almost drooling over the luscious colors of the yarns. Keri fell in love with a couple of the afghans there and started asking about the crochet classes!!! I was so surprised-I never knew she even had an interest in learning something like that. The lady who owns the shop said that she can get me started with socks. WooHoo!!!!
