I don't remember if the packaging on my wool batt indicated how thick it was, but it appearred to be 1/2". I was surpised how light and easily compactible it was. Mine was a twin size quilt and I had no trouble gathering evening more than half of it into the palm of my hand. It has lots of bounce but it is so easily compactible.
Just reread your post about your son wanting a high loft warm quilt. I think my package stated that stitching should have no greater open spaces than 4". Because the batt is so easily compacted make sure you choose a quilt design that is not very dense.

I have a Bernina 830LE and have been using this batting for my Hoffman Challenge quilt. I have been really impressed with it. If you'd like you can see my blog about this here: http://blog.bjfabricartist.com/

Also make sure you are following your particular batt's recommended stitch density info. Enjoy it! Another thing I was happily surprised at how quickly my quilt air dried.

I'm not sure that you have to stick to every 4". I densely quilt with wool and it holds beautifully. I think what this means is that it needs stitching at least every four inches, if the stitching is looser, the batting may shift when it is washed.Originally posted by Isabellet.Thank you for your advice. This was very confusing for me as a beginning quilter. OK Quilt Pros, do I have this right?
