When I plan a border I use the Golden ratio that I have used for years in my artwork. I was very pleased to see that Jinny Beyer has a set of Golden Gauge calipers for sale on her website. The Golden ratio is all around us in nature and discovered in ancient times when the Eygptians developed geometry. The ratio is 1 to .618 or as I use to tell students to think about the area that is between 1/4 of their area and 1/2 of it. The other end would be between 1/2 and 3/4. That gives a general not exact mark. The calipers show you the exact mark without having to do the math.
Jinny Beyer has a great free block of the month class on Craftsy. I believe it was last month's lesson were she shows how to use the calipers.
I have enjoyed reading the various ideas about finishing the borders or no borders. It just goes to show there is no one correct answer! What fun!

There have been some wonderful suggestions made here....I think this quilt just sparkles ! And with a little
change in the borders will be so pretty and modern. I use the ratio method most and narrow med/dark
"separator " will make a big difference....nothing wrong with the teal..just too much of a good thing ! BTW...
those low contrast blocks give the eye a place to rest  in all those glorious scraps !

I love borderless quilts. I see only two blocks that offer very little contrast. I'd be inclined to go without borders. Look at it with rested eyes and spirit.

Yesterday it was over 90 with heat index 101 in my part of Virginia.
I spent the afternoon and evening at my virtual retreat down in my cool basement sewing room, with cold, icy Diet Coke and an audio book from the library. I worked on making the arcs for my two Bali Wedding Star quilts. It was great!
Happy quilting,
Judith

Judith that looks yummy.
Today I've been playing with my friends new twins. Feeding and bathing them, it was a joy. I gave her the quilt which she was thrilled with and some rather suspect little tops I'd knitted with blood sweat and tears.
finished quilt
I think I prefer the back, pieced from left overs.
I brightened up my wall by putting up my mug rugs. Thank you all.

Anne it's lovely to hear from you, I'm fine. I'm loving my scissors and the sound that they make, so I guess that we both must be sad cases  I am enjoying quilting the ABC BOM now I've actually started the quilting. For the quilting design I looked at the individual photos of Janet's quilt (you provided a link to it) and more or less copied her design, otherwise it would have taken me years deciding how I should quilt it. I'm not being too stressed out with small mistakes either, which makes the FMQ relaxing to do. Hope that you enjoy your quilt show.
Best wishes Pam

cough (with drawing pins or masking tape Anne.
I made one so they can lay on it on the floor. You can't use quilts on small babies any more but I'll make another so they have one each when they grow a bit.
There's fish, octopus, boat, bubbles etc in the border and all sorts in the middle including footprint, their names, their grandparents, and words like 'Max and Theo have 20 toes' and 'mummy has eyes in the back of her head' other stuff to keep me amused when quilting.
This evening I've been making bicycle book thongs very pretty but I'm a bit high on the nail varnish I use to secure the knots
