Annis, I just want to add jewish chicken soup as a recipe for you to look up for your DD. I had a version I picked up from a paper over here and tried it out one time when my DM wasn't well, and it went down very well - light, and tasty for a diminished appetite.

That chicken soup sounds easy to make. It takes a long time to cook though and I will have to cut up an onion! Maybe I will try it next week. If she doesn't like it I'm sure someone in her family will.

I don't know which version you looked up, but as far as I recall from the version I used, essentially you put the chicken some carrots & possibly some swede in a pot, cover with water, bring to the boil and then simmer until the chicken is cooked - depending on weight about 1 1/2 - 2 hrs. I don't recall onion. Taking the cooked liquor you discard the original veg and then cook some fresh fine diced carrot & swede , dice off some of the chicken and serve the liquor with 3-4 pieces of carrot, swede and chicken well seasoned with salt & pepper, so that it is a delight to the eye and light on the stomach. It should be cooked quickly and lightly so to keep the freshness in, not boiled to death.
But as I say there are probably as many versions as their are cooks :blink:

Woo Hoo! my fabrics arrived today :woohoo: Now I can hopefully get on with starching them for use. The piece I am planning is not so much a 'miniature', as a 'maxiature' because I have already made the design in Florentine needlepoint, and will be making it larger than the original. :P

And, as far as I know, there must be garlic in that penicillin! If there's no garlic - it's just soup.

I was wondering what swede was too. Another dr. appt. today with no answers. The next appt. is Wed. so get the weekend free to do whatever, probably sew some more bindings and maybe do a little quilting. Picked up the 3 yr. old at day care, dropped him off at home then picked up the other 2 children. When I got back the 3 yr. old had cut his finger with some scissors and mom was trying to stop the bleeding. Held his finger closed for 30 min. waiting for dad to get there to take him to get stitches. Only needed 2 on that tiny finger. Then found out my DSIL with the broken leg will have to have a knee replacement next week, probably Wed. The leg healed but the pins didn't hold so she's still in Rehab. What a day! Still got a binding sewn tonight. Will look for an easier soup recipe.

Swedes are rutabagas. Even after 3 1/2 years here we are still always having to ask what something or other is.

Sorry to here about the little fingers being hurt. And yikes from a broken leg to a knee replacement. Hope they both heal well.
Yesterday learned my grandson is in the ICU. He has diabetes. Went in with DKA (sugars real high, dehydrated). Kidneys aren't doing too well. Teens and diabetes. Not a good combo. Fortunately I had better luck keeping his mom (also has diabetes) out of the hospital and under 1/2 way good control.

I hate being half way around the world in times like this. It will be good to go home this summer. Not much sewing the last few days. I did get all the stars done last weekend for my Stars for a New Day BOM's outer border.

Lorna and Annis, take care. Looks like Annis has way too much to do helping out and Lorna is to far away to pitch in ways she'd like to do. Distance is the pits when family is in need. Prayers for both of you.

I will be praying for Annis' family and also for Lorna's. I too have a GS with type one who also has Downs Syndrome. It can be a great challenge to take care of him. I guess we all have our loads to bare.
I finally finished stitching the binding on my January quilt. For my January challenge I just wanted to get the top finished so I feel I am ahead of the game. I am half way finished with the piecing on my Feb. UFO and hope to have it quilted by the end of the month. Still have work to do on the dreaded taxes also.

Lorna, thanks for the translation. Sounds like you and Annis are having a 'right go of it' with one thing after another. Hope things settle down for you both soon.

Sorry to hear or your troubles, Annis, I hope things fall into a peaceful balance very soon. And, Lorna, Yup, it's hard when distance makes 'being there' for our family or friends quite a challenge. Do you have Skype or Face time?

I've been babysitting for a several days this week and I am tired, but not exhausted. What a wonder how things improve with time! Got some sewing done with my almost-3 year old GD who 'helped' me, by passing the pins and sitting on my knee and pressed the reverse button when needed while sewing. She also loved my grid-ruler and counted all the numbers. Reminded me of driving on my daddy' knee when I was a little girl His foot on the pedal, and "I" was driving the car! She helped make herself a jumper (not the British kind, which we call a sweater,) but the kind of "frock" with no sleeves or collar that you wear a blouse under. Like our old school uniforms. It's so nice to have a couple of girls to sew for - and her mom can cook, but not sew, so I really need to teach that you gal how to sew. Almost three is not too early! I learned so much from just watching watching watching my mom, and was sewing very early on.

Turnips are the general term for swedes, rudabagas, mangle wurzels here in Ireland. Swedes are usually only referred to if the turnip is very small and white.

Lorna, so sorry to hear about your grandson. I really hope things are under control now. It must be such a worry. I am sure you will be much happier when you are back in the States.

Terrie, your jumper would be what we would call a pinafore and it's what we wore to school too. A 'frock' was always only a summer dress or a lightweight party dress. Isn't it funny how the same words can be used slightly differently? Loved hearing about your granddaughter on your knee 'helping' you. I reckon she has the bug already.
