    Victoria Findley, Show 1404

I so thoroughly enjoyed this show because I'm a "can't throw anything away" quilter. I have found a few ideas over the years for using scraps but this can even use my "orphan" blocks-whole or cut up! Great ideas for my scraps. And it even fulfills my wish to have different 'ministry' in what I make!

Woo Hoo! Now that's a HOME RUN!!!!

It was a great show, wasn't it? I have her book and it's fabulous. So many ideas, so many ways to interpret what she's showing us. I loved the story about her grandma sitting on the front porch sewing her quilts. She deserves her win at QuiltCon, that's for sure.

I have been using her methods for years in various quilt projects... MILE A MINUTE, GIBLET & GRAVY, STRING QUILTS, CRAZY QUILTS... We usually did pretty basic blocks with them... never used the MADE FABRIC into any smaller units. I really liked that idea of turning them into patch work. I like all the tips that she gives us ... many of them new to me.

What I did learn when making fabric for such units you have to be careful where the seams land they can create a lot of bulk. YOU also have to make sure the outer strips are larger ... if they are too small you sew seam on a seam which does not work out very well. I ran into other problems but have not used this technique in a while and can not remember them all. I do remember I enjoyed the techniques.

          Nonnie

I posted a (bad) picture of a quilt top I made using the technique. A friend quilted it and we donated it to a Safe House.

Since I don't care too much for scrap quilts, this show did not really appeal to me. Isn't it funny how you all love it? I like symmetry, or at least controlled chaos. I don't have barrels of scraps since I've only been quilting since 2004, and didn't sew before that. But it was an interesting technique and maybe I will use it in some future practice project.

Lovely quilt Nonnie. And Great blocks Lynn. I don't think it's possible to make quilts without having scraps and with fabric so expensive here in Ireland the scraps get used up not thrown out. I love the variety in a scrappy quilt and I have made several of them. I get less bored if I am using different fabric all the time. Although, it sure is a messy business.

We quilter's try to make a bit of order out of chaos. Put what's left together and make something beautiful. If not beautiful, then useful.
