Thank you, Lorra, Karen and Dawn! And Dawn, my grandmother, in Italy, who was from the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, never missed a new year's eve dinner without baccala', a dried cod fish, soaked overnight and slowly cooked in milk and drizzled with extra virgin olive oil. I keep searching for it here, but it is hit-and-miss when the stores carry it. And I love herring too! Renata

Renata, at Christmas time in Kerry they have salted ling (which is a large cod) cooked similarly. But you have to really soak and rinse the fish overnight and then cook it in the milk and onions. They then have it with white sauce. It is still very salty and not particularly to my taste. I think I would prefer the black-eyed peas too!

Our baccala' sounds a lot like your salted ling... the preparation, including the long soak (we soaked it for a couple of days, though, changing the water once a day, which did take a lot of the salty taste out of it). Nevertheless, it is an acquired taste: as a very young child I can't say it was my favorite holiday dish. But as a young adult, I enjoyed it as a family tradition. Now, I enjoy it probably more for the memories of times gone by... if that makes sense.

As for black-eyed peas, I like those too and always have a bag of dried black-eyed peas in the pantry... good comfort food, especially when stewed with ham hocks...

No black eyed peas here. Our must have New Year's food is pork and sauerkraut.

I would love the pork and sauerkraut, but no black eyed peas for me. My DF planted an acre of then when I was little and we had to pick them by hand. I always thought they tasted like mud. I guess I ate the mud pies when I was little, or how would I know what mud tastes like.

WHEW! After I posted I happened to think that maybe this would have been a crude thing to post for your holiday! I really meant no offense!

Maybe I should change my avatar, seeing that I was born in the year of the dragon.

Too funny, Margo! I still cannot look at the picture without laughing. And this should be an auspicious year for Lorchen, since dragons seems to have lots of luck, especially in their year.
