Metallic Embroidery Thread
Hi everyone
I am a beginner patchwork/embroidery enthusiast. I decided to have patchwork on one side of a cushion cover and an embroidery design on the other. I decided to use metallic thread, but the colouring comes away and does not sew. Has anyone else experienced this? If yes, how did you get around it please?
Thanks

Kurtzie, Metallics can be very difficult to work with. First, a good quality thread is essential. Superior Threads makes a fantastic metallic thread that stands up to machine embroidery. Second, use a top-stitch or metallica needle #90. This has a larger eye. Third, loosen your top tension. Fourth, if possible, slow down. Metal rubbing on metal causes friction which causes heat and can help disintegrate your thread. Fifth, stand on your left foot with both eyes crossed and your right hand encased in Michael Jackson's glove.........(okay, I have a sick sense of humor, but sometimes it is just a matter of luck and karma! LOL  )

Bobbi, I like to use Superior's Bottom Line in the bobbin. (No, I am not a sales rep for Bob the Thread Guy  ). The key to the bobbin thread is that it should be a very smooth thread so that the metallic doesn't get "hung up" on any slubs or bits that may be on a cotton thread.

Maggie, since you are the one who's providing answers on this subject right now, I will ask you. Is it possible to use metallic thread in the bobbin? That way it won't have to go through the needle. If so, can the bobbin be wound the "normal" way?
Thanks!

Bob has a page on Superior threads website on working with metallics. http://www.superiorthreads.com/educa...-with-metallic
I was taught that when using a metallic thread in top to omit threading it through the last guide beofre the needle. That works for me.

JoAnne, I haven't done much bobbin work, so I don't know the answer to that question. But I imagine that it would work. I would still put Bottom Line on the top or some similar smooth polyester thread. You may or may not need to fiddle with your bobbin tension. I haven't checked out that Superior link, but their information is always the best.

I used to have problems with metallics until I started using Superior's metallics and set up my machine as suggested in this discussion, using a lower tension and the titanium top stitching needles. I only use bobbin work for the larger cord-like threads, such as Ricky's Razzle Dazzle. I love working with metallics now.
