Although I am blessed with a nice space to sew, and I do have a small design wall, there is not enough wall space to have a permanent BIG design wall. I took a 4'x8' sheet of insulation board and cut it down the middle to make 2 pcs, 4'x4'. I used duct tape to create a hinge between the two pcs, then covered one whole side with white flannel. It's really lightweight, and because it is hinged it will stand alone anywhere I need it and I can fold it up and just slide it into the closet when I'm not using it. I also added grommets to one end, and hooks on a ceiling rafter (I'm in an unfinished basement) so I can hang it for a large wall when I need to photograph a large quilt. Works for me!

Margo, sounds like a great idea! My sewing room is composed of mostly south facing windows, which is a good thing in our Florida winters, but not so good in summer. What with 2 door openings, 3 additional windows, my cutting table, sewing area, and storage units, not much wall space, so I love your idea of a folding design board...thanks. Right now, I have to frustratingly tape my pieces to a metal door, and that's just not cuttin' it! :?
BTW, your quilts are magnificent!

Margo and SD thanks for your suggestions. Sounds like a trip to Home Depot this weekend. Is anyone having time to quilt since "The Quilt Show" came up? I'm loving this site sooooo much. Since I work full-time and can't go to my guild meetings, this is my contact with quilters. Thank you all for being there.

Devora, ain't it the truth?! I find myself taking breaks to come in here and see what's happening with our new friends! I've learned so much already in the short time in The Quilt Show's existence. Can you imagine when the shows air? I'll never get away from here!!!

My sewing room. It needs new paint and decorating, but considering this sunroom was just a large room for our kitties litter box and their condo by the windows until about a year ago, it's coming along just fine!

When we first moved into our house 12 years ago there was a living room that we never used for the 1st 6 months we lived here - so, my Hubby and I put up a wall, a Dutch door, new flooring and a crystal chandelier (wooo-whooo) and made it my 19' X 14" sewing space. Mess that it is, I LOVE IT!
By the way, I tried to insert an image but it didn't seem to work.

Sewso - since you have a metal door, would magnets work for you? It would seem to be easier than taping. I just bought some self sticking metal strips at the office supply store and will put them up at the top of my wall and then magnetically attach batting. It should be easy to take down when necessary - hopefully not often!

Just wanted to add my two cents worth....
I went to Home Depot and and bought a piece of 4 x 8 (comes in various sizes) foam insultation, sprayed with stray can adhesive and covered it with fabric. Only took me about 20 minutes to make and it works great.
You don't even need pins most of the time because the fabric on the board "grabs" your fabric.
If you decide to make one, just make sure you use perminant adhesive as the temp adhesive is not strong enough.
