I have a Featherweight which I got last summer from a repair shop in England and I love it! It's far more precise than any of my other machines for piecing as it can't zig-zag.
Amongst my other machines (!)I also have a Janome Platinum Jem, which is a 3/4 size machine and that's what I mostly use. It's so easy to set up and the stop/ start button is very useful. I've even used it to quilt full-size quilts with no problem. The newer model has even more stitches so that's what I'm considering buying my daughter rather than passing on one of my basic older machines.

I really liked that website about Featherweights. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. It was filled with so much information. I know I will be going back to learn more!

Vicki, can you provide a direct link? The addy you gave just takes me to a list of things for sale.

I had too many 221's in my link! Sorry for the mix-up, I was so excited to see the machine.
The entire website contains tons of information. I keep reading it over and over. It's good stuff!
I'm preparing for a workshop on the 221 for my guild. It will be a fun day, with the history of the machine and hands-on maintenance training.

E-bay has a FW for sale that sports the San Francisco badge.
It can be yours for $2,500

I did just receive an e-bay purchase that I have been wanting a long time and finally found at a (I believe) really good price.
A 222 free arm machine, and it is beautiful and makes a great stitch.
I can't wait to really sew with it.

Terrific restoration job. Thanks Lottie. I inherited a featherweight from my mother-in-law and it has a beautiful stitch. I believe that you can even get a free-motion foot for them now :!: I plan to get one someday.

Yes, you can free motion quilt using a featherweight but you have to realize that those old motors weren't made for that purpose.
It works like a charm, but you should let your FW rest every once in awhile so the motor doesn't overheat.
And, it works well without worrying about the feed dogs being up instead of down.
I have a feed dog cover but when I do quilt using my FW I prefer not to use it.
It's easier with the feed dogs up.

Where did you get your free motion foot that you use to quilt on your featherweight?

Ask for a low shank darning foot to fit a singer.
                            Have fun!
