Do you have foot 72 and the Bernina ruler set?

I watched the Amanda Murphy video about the new Bernina presser foot 72 for home machines--and the new ruler set for free motion quilting. It looks amazing--and better than the Westalee foot because it has a height adjustment screw. I was just wondering if anyone has the set and how you like it. The ruler set is $172.00 and I don't know how much the foot costs. I was thinking I could wait till the next 25% off sale.

I do have the 72 foot. Sorry don't know how much it was. I gave my husband the 25% off coupon before Christmas and asked him to go buy it for me. While at Road to California, I ordered the Bernina ruler set for 20% off. I have not received it yet.

This last weekend I took at 2 day class at my LQS on quilting with rulers. Paula Reid taught it. She was using the Westerlee rulers. I borrowed rulers to play with them and try the quilting. I did like my 72 foot. I didn't buy the ruler set as I want to see what I can do with my Bernina rulers first before I decide what else I might need. Where would I find the Amanda Murphy video? I saw one Bernina video on setting up the sewing machine to use the 72 foot but not really about what to do with each of the rulers.

I, too, have the #72 ruler foot but do not have the ruler set. While the ruler set has some of the basics and is nice (I have tried them), I opted to look at some of the other rulers on the market with more markings on them.

#72 Ruler Foot
I think the retail price of the #72 ruler foot is $119.95. I have been playing with my ruler foot quite a bit lately and love it. At first, I wondered whether I would use it for stitching in the ditch. As it turns out, the marking on the front of the foot, if you keep it lined up on the ditch, you can't go wrong with using a ruler on ditching straight lines--it is quick and easy. I've also tried the foot to ditch without the ruler, and the same mark on the ruler foot is the perfect guide for ditching free-hand. For me, priceless!

I love it for ruler work. I have great visibility and the lines inside the foot help ensure when you put your needle down that it is going exactly where you want it to go. When coming to the end of a line of stitching, I see perfectly where I need to stop.

I have also used it for free motion quilting and really like the stability it has on my quilt sandwich. I've done small feathers in a 1 1/4" triangle using it and had sufficient visibility to do it.

Rulers
The Bernina ruler set was nice but did not have as many markings as I wanted so I decided to not purchase those for now. When looking at other rulers, take into account the size of your machine. I have a Bernina 830 so my harp space is 12".

I have a 10" straight ruler by Quilters Apothecary (Jamie Wallen) and like it because of the 1/4" line markings as well as the 45 degree lines that make it ideal for marking crosshatching (particularly easy for diagonal crosshatching--he has a video you can see online).

I purchased the Handi Versa Tool (Suzanne Michelle Hyland) because it is small and fits well on my domestic machine and has at least four different functions. I purchased it on recommendation of a longarm quilter who uses it frequently. No regrets on buying this one for me!

I've been playing with Lisa Calle's Proline 8 ruler to do 1/8" lines on a block. It works well on my machine and it was easy for me to learn. I intend to purchase a few of her rulers because I really like the results I get. I've attached the results of that ruler work here in a photo--it probably only took 5-10 minutes to do max. I am not an experienced quilter. The ruler is expensive but it makes straight line quilting with precision a breeze. The markings on the ruler helped me keep properly lined up as I shifted from one line of quilting to the next. It was small enough that it fit on the bed of my machine without rocking. She also has curved rulers and circles and spines.

I have not tried it yet, but I hear that the Handi Gadgets F Wave is also a very nice ruler for creating spines.

I plan to look at some of Ronda Beyer's and The Quilted Pineapple rulers as well. One of my criteria for any ruler I consider is whether it is large enough to accomplish what I want to do, yet small enough to fit comfortably in the space I have on my domestic machine.

I have the #72 foot as well. I think it's wonderful and I am finding that I am using it a lot for FMQ as well as ruler work. It seems to glide over the fabric and doesn't get stuck on bulky seams which does sometimes happen with the #24 foot. I don't have any of the special rulers as they are hard to come by in Ireland so I have used a stamper's ruler instead which is about 1/4" thick and about 7"x5" and works just as well for straight lines. I have a Bernina 750 so I adjust it according to the video and find that it works really well with a foot pressure at about -3. I know that I will get a lot of use out of this foot unlike the BSR which is just annoying. I will be purchasing the Handi Versa Tool as soon as I can because I think that looks like it will be very useful. I wonder about some of the longer rulers because I think maybe it would be very easy for such a long ruler to slip while using it even if you have Invisigrip or some other thing on the underside to stop slipping. I reckon for a domestic machine smaller might be better.

Good morning. I have had the #72 ruler foot and Bernina ruler set for about a month. The foot is fabulous - a real improvement over the Westalee foot. Earlier posts highlight the features of the foot that are superior. (Note that I had the Westalee rulers that came with the foot - the thinner plastic is not easy to work with and seems risky with the new foot.)

The Bernina ruler set is nice. I confess it was WAY pricey. I think it was over $200. I ordered it in a moment of gratitude when G Street fabrics wizards showed me how to solve several problems I was having with my 820. (Also, they charged me about $200 less than my previous shop for the annual service.)

It includes five items.
1. A straight edge ruler with a 45 degree angle on one end and a curved end (appropriate for clamshell work) The ruler is a good length to use with domestic machines. Quite stable and wide enough to get a grip but still keep one finger on the fabric for stability. In comparison to the other one I have (with two vertical pegs for gripping) - it is more versatile and just as easy to use.
2. A scalloped edge ruler - one inch scallops on one side and more open "spine" like curve on the other. I really like this ruler but it is longer than the straight edge and will take some practice.
3. A boot shaped one with two concave curves, one convex curve and a wave - quite versatile. (I believe there is a good Youtube video that shows the many things you can do with it.) It's a perfect size and easy to use.
4. A set of nesting circles - you stitch inside the circles. I love this set!
5. A set of nesting ovals (haven't tried yet).

The other ruler I really like is June by Gina Perkes. Lots of shapes on one disk!

Thanks for the feedback. I love my #72 ruler foot and yes, rulers are fun--I found the transition to using rulers on a domestic machine very easy. Sound like you did too! :cheer:

With practice (like anything) I'm sure I will improve but I really did like the results. I have a quilt ready for quilting and after some more practice I think I will try doing some with the rulers. I only have her rulers so can't vouch for any others.

Hi Lori, good to see you on the Forum again! I took a class from Lisa Calle a few years ago, before longarm rulers were being used with domestic machines... You're right, she IS an awesome teacher. Recently, I borrowed the ProLine rulers and they worked beautifully with my Bernina 830 and I have been going through Lisa's checklist of Quilter's Groove Rulers, watching videos and trying to get an idea of which ones would be useful to me. I like her rulers enough to invest in a fair number of them--I have not problem only owning her rulers--the ones I tried were great, with excellent markings. Which ones do you have? What was your thinking behind the ones you did purchase? Are you quilting on a domestic machine or a longarm? Any thoughts you can share on or offline would be appreciated.

I have the #72 foot for my small Bernina.

I have a couple small rulers on Long term loan from a friend she is a Long Armer and does not use the smaller rulers. Hence long term loan.

Have enjoyed the process.

Why is foot #72 an improvement over the Westalee foot?

I would not say improvement necessarily.

The Bernina#72 foot is a Bernina foot so no special shanks or adapters needed.

The beauty is this footwas made for the Bernina Q series (their long arms) but Bernina is a standard size and configuration over all their machines. So it fits perfectly in their new 700 series as well as their older series. It works greatin my 165e.

It is the Bernina way. That is what makes it so special.

Only other company i know that makes a standard ruler foot is Janome.

Just my two cents, but I think the Bernina Foot #72 is really MUCH better than the Westalee foot. The Bernina adjuster knob does not get in the way of the ruler--even if you position the ruler on the right side of the foot. The Bernina foot does not hop at all and it glides smoothly across your fabric--make sure to adjust the presser foot pressure in "settings" (I have mine set at 0.5 with a thin batting quilt sandwich).
