    Dual feed vs walking foot

My 880 has the dual feed foot but I am wondering if anyone else ever feels that a walking foot would work a little better in some situations. If you have a machine with dual feed, have you purchased or thinking of purchasing a walking foot? I'm thinking that it would help sometimes to have the feeding assist in front of the needle but maybe I'm way off.

About a year ago I bought a brand new machine with all of the bells and whistles. (Brother) It came with a dual feed foot. I don't feel like it's feed works as well as my 20 year old machine's walking foot did. And, it is VERY bulky! So, I will be ordering a walking foot for it.

I always had a Pfaff, with it's built in dual feed & I loved it!! It worked great for all my sewing. I now have a Bernina 830, (new style), that I bought used, it came with the dual feed as well as a walking foot. I have only recently used my walking foot & I was actually very impressed at how well it worked. I was quilting a rather bulky quilt on it & it really helped move things thru the machine, better than the dual feed. In my opinion, the larger surface of the walking foot, helps pull the quilt, or whatever thru the machine more evenly. While the dual feed is great for general sewing or piecing, the walking foot really does help with multiple layers.

I agree. I use my Pfaff with dual feed for piecing and my Janome with a walking foot for quilting.

I played around and some of your comments were spot on. I bit the bullet and did purchase the walking foot for my 880. As I experimented over the weekend with quilt sandwiches, I noticed that while the dual feed foot does do a nice job, it just doesn't quite give the feel of even control when pulling through the quilt sandwich. I think that especially for ditch stitching, this will be most beneficial. I could do it on the Q20 long arm, but I kind of like the "mind monotony" that ditching on my 880 with walking foot provides!!! After working all week, it helps to just relax the brain LOL Plus it's too easy to go fast on the long arm and get careless with ditching.

I was informed that 'dual feed' applied to two layers of fabric. However on small projects the dual feed works well but for large ones I prefer to use the walking foot. Hope that helps.

My Bernina dealer told me that the dual feed feet helps keep the two layers of fabric together, but that the Bernina walking foot does a better job.
He is right. It is a great walking foot. Does a beautiful job.
