Bernina needs a ruler foot

Bonjour Chantal, ça va? How is the weather in Paris today? Thank you for your suggestions and offer for assistance. I am sure I will have lots of questions along the way. Actually I did want to use the open toe foot with a wadded quilt because I completely forgot to stitch down a vine which I had fused in place. ops:

Hello Rita, the wether in Paris BOFF!!! as we say, it is a rainy day. Did you free motion quilt with your previous machine ? If you intend to, with your Bernina, I shall give you Youtube web. on which you can go with super tutorial. We have very good ones on the quilt show but more is better than not enough.

Hey Rita, congrats on your new 'toy'. How do you like it compared to the Janome, and does it come with a knee bar for lifting the presser foot?

Congratulations on you new machine, Rita! I'll be very interested to hear about your experiences with it. A friend of mine just got a 720, so I'll be talking to her, too. I've been thinking about getting a 700 series machine but haven't taken the plunge yet. I think one of the big things that's keeping me away is the new bobbin. I actually like my smaller bobbins because they force me to take breaks more often. I also like that you can get cheap 3rd-party bobbins (even if Bernina doesn't like you doing that) since I like to keep my wound bobbins with my thread spools rather than constantly throwing away a bunch of thread because I'm switching colors.

I also had heard about a problem with the straight stitch on the 750, but I believe they made a change to the software that fixed that. So I'd like to hear if you run into any problems.

Yes Chantal I have done FMQ before so I know how it goes. I just finished quilting a large quilt on my Janome which you can see on the CW thread here on the forum. I have watched quite a few youtube tutorials on the 750QE but really happy to have a link to more, thanks.

Rosemary, it does have a knee lift and I like it better than the Janome one which never seemed to be quite in the right place for my knee. When I was doing the Spools quilt border I ended up with a pain in my hip from having to push my knee so far off to the right to engage the knee lift. But doing FMQ on the Janome Horizon was great and very smooth and by the end of the most recent quilt I was getting really good at it and my stitches were much more consistent. I am about to try using the BSR on a small wall-hanging so we will see how that goes. :unsure:

Nancy I know what you mean about the bobbins, but on the plus side it means that there will be a lot less changing and winding bobbins too. Having just finished the wedding quilt and wound 24 bobbins for that I was really cursing not having a bigger bobbin on the Janome. My Pfaff Select 4 holds more thread than the Janome. I also like having a sensor on the 750 to tell me when I have run out of thread, top and bottom. I have not had a problem with the straight stitch, so far, so hopefully that glitch was sorted.

It sounds like you're keeping the Janome so I thought I'd suggest what I did with my knee lift lever to increase the size and make it easier to reach for me. Maybe you already did this but I cut off a short length of a swimming pool noodle floaty thing and slid it over the knee lift. It helped for me a lot.

Hey Rita! So happy to have you join us Bernina gals and guys. B) :silly: :lol: I have an 830 LE, a B350, and and old 1230...all working and wonderful. I agree with your nit-picks on what is included. They need to throw in about 20 bobbins, a 20D foot (the applique foot that uses the dual feed), and the 97D. I am looking forward to seeing what you make with your new power tool. Happy sewing! Oh Rita, how exciting! A new baby girl that doesn't keep you up at night, unless you want her to!

I have a 730 Bernina, but it doesn't have a dual feed. I finally bought a walking foot a few years ago and wished I had done it years and years ago! I ask for bobbins for birthday and Christmas gifts. It's easy for people to buy and you sure use them up! I gave up on my BSR. I worked with it, and worked with it, becoming so frustrated. I finally took it back and the dealer agreed that there was something wrong with my BSR and gave me a new one. (It was still under warranty.) I turn off the bobbin minder as any teeny little piece of lint makes it stop the machine and that can be very annoying. And yes, I watch carefully to make sure I don't sew too long without bobbin thread. :huh:

Bernina has updates to it's software and I found that I had to ask the dealer to update the software when I took Sybil in for her yearly check ups. Maybe my new dealer here will do it automatically. Mr. Fix it here in the tri cities seems much nicer than my old Bernina dealer in Sacramento.

Good to hear about the knee lift, although I am surprised that it isn't adjustable - not good!

Geneva - surely Sybil isn't old enough to smoke? :huh: or are we back to pot-holders again? :silly: :P

Congratulations, Rita, on Heidi coming home! :cheer: I hope you will love your new sewing machine as much as those of us who love our Berninas do! You have a great dealer who spent quality time with you to get you off on the right foot and that means a lot!

On an aside, when you use the feet that are designated with a "D" (for dual feed), make sure to always engage the dual feed, whether you need dual feed or not (or use a "C" foot, which has the computer "eye" on the top but not dual feed). Sometimes you will find that if you use a dual feed foot but do not engage the dual feed your line of stitching might be a bit wobbly without the dual feed engaged.
