...and if you ever get second thoughts about the money again, just remember, you can't take it with when you go...Originally posted by ltdermdvmGulp, Gulp, giggle, big silly grin.....I DID IT!!!!! I ordered my 830 LE today
and I decided to keep my 440 QE. I couldn't sleep last night because I had this long talk with myself last night on the way home from the clinic and told myself to just frickin' do it. I work my tail off, why in the world should I feel guilty about getting myself something that will give me hours of pleasure? But then of course I couldn't sleep because I kept thinking I was nuts to spend that much on my therapy, lol.
so enjoy your new machine! I still thought about the wisdom of the investment for a couple of weeks after I had bought my 830, but once I started playing and succeeding with it, I reached a tipping point and never turned back!

That great so congratulations to you big time, but hey just think while you are "in therapy" on the machine you are MAKING STUFF so its a win win situation in my eyes....hee hee hee
Good idea to keep the 440, especially if you go have to go off to sewing class's or for those in depth therapy weekend sewing retreats that I am sure you will need to do

Good for you!!!
At the office I have this little photocopy of an old Calvin & Hobbs cartoon. Where little Calvin is all alone in the yard/field. Around him the huge black night sky with lots and lots of stars. And Calvin is screaming up: "I'm important too!"
Always remember that "YOU ARE important too".
No matter what life throws at us, we all need and DESERVE "me" time and a "me" thing or two.
Without these we would not be able to be the fully effective functioning machines for our families, our work, and life in general!Lotti, Kuessnacht - Switzerland

You guys are awesome! How did I not find you sooner? LOL. When I was doing all my research on the machine over the last week, I would find lots of posts about the 830 and how ridiculous it was to spend that kind of $$ on a sewing machine when there are other less expensive models in this economy. I do guilt better than most (growing up in a catholic school will do that too you, lol), so I truly do appreciate the encouragement that it was "ok" for me to do this for myself. Luckily, my husband also has a hobby (remote-control helicopters, planes, and cars) and it is an $$ hobby. He has NO issue with me doing this and has been supportive, so I will just count myself as one lucky girl and stop stressing about it and just enjoy her!
The QS called last night and they got their delivery early
SOOOOOO, if they can get her sewn in this morning, I MIGHT even get to bring my girl home this afternoon. I'm not ready for her though!!! I wanted to rearrange and get the room all set up, lol. Maybe I'll just set her in the dining room with a tiara on top while I shuffle
Aw, who am I kidding...I won't be able to resist unpacking her and playing! I have another question about my cabinet, but will start another thread for that.
Thanks again everyone! You are all so kind!Lotti, Kuessnacht - Switzerland

Whatever surface you put your machine on, especially when the embroidery module is attached, make sure it is a solid surface (not one with an extension leaf of a table). That surface has to be completely flat. If not, eventually you will wear on the part of the embroidery module that hooks into the sewing machine proper. How will you know your surface is not as flat as you thought? When the hoop is attached and you start embroidering, you will start seeing 'etching' on the stainless steel surface of the sewing machine. See 830 Series Mastery Video #2 at http://www.exnovodesign.com for more detail on this.
Can't tell you much about modifying a sewing table since I have an unconventional setup (that works for me, for now).
Enjoy your machine!!! Watch the Mastery videos before you go to your guide class--you will remember a whole lot more when you get home from the guide class and start up your 830.
Cheers,
Renata

CONGRATULATIONS GIRL!
You are going to love this machine, I understand the anxiety over the price though, I actually bought a Demo machine when I bought mine which is sort of funny because I could afford whatever I wanted but I think we who have grown up sewing have a very conservative careful side, which is a good thing.
The best thing about the 830 is I don't think you could ever out grow it, there are so many things to explore you will never get bored !
I am happy for you!

A colleague of mine smokes, and moans that she can't afford to go on holiday. I didn't say anything, but when I had enough of the moaning I just handed her a piece of paper with the calculation of what she wastes by smoking and how much a posh holiday in the Bahamas would cost........
I don't smoke, but had to bring up two sons on my own. My main machine was a little Frister & Rossman Cub4. It took years before I could afford a Bernina 630. Am I a better quilter since I got that wonderful Bernina? No. But I can do all sorts of things that my trusty Cub4 can't do. So I'm definitely having more fun now.
Enjoy your 830!From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood

I loved your reply. I sold all my old machines (4) saved some money each week from my groceries for 2 years, & asked for contributions each Christmas. I used my Mom's old Featherweight until I could afford my new machine. It was totally worth it for me. Just make sure that you really can use all the features it offers.
