    Mechanical Bernina

Could anyone give me advice regarding the 1008 mechanical Bernina? Can it free-motion decently? Would you recommend it? My Singer Scholastic recently died (she unfortunately took up smoking in her last days, and was pronounced DOA at the repair shop). I don't trust the computer things, even though I am a bit tempted toward the Activa 210/220. Thanks in anticipation, D.

That Bernina 1008 looks like the 930 of legend. It should free-motion just fine. I still love sewing on a mechanical Bernina that I inherited from my mom. The stitching is beautiful.

Not sure if it helps, but my 1001 still quilts beautifully - Eddie uses it now. I only moved to a 430 for the stitch variety and computer control.

I use my 1080 & love it for free motion. I also use my New Home/Janome...that works well too.

I think it drops the feed dogs and has needle down, so I'd say go for it.

Thank you everyone for your help. I really would rather get a machine that will see me off the planet, so your comments have made me resolve to go the 140kms distance for a 1008 test-drive at least. Thanks again, D

The 1008 is a great machine. My only objection is that it doesn't come with a knee lift. (At least, what I can remember.) I think it is a little bigger than the Activas in size but not as big as the Auroras.

There used to be a 1030 that was mechanical AND had a knee lift. I dont' think these machines have the needle down function. Does the foot control that allows you to tap on the heel (to raise or lower needle) work on the mechanical machines? I forget.
