Marking Fabric

I use crayola washable markers almost exclusively to mark tops for quilting. There are enough colors to show up on almost every fabric. I've never had a problem washing them out, but I'm very careful not to iron over them.

I really like soap slivers for marking on dark fabric. I know it will wash out if I don't iron over it. The only real problem is keeping my neatnik daughter from throwing them out.

Also the washable markers make fun hair colors! DGD has light hair and loves to streak her hair pretty colors.

A friend of mine marked a king size blue and white quilt with an orange Crayola marker. I wanted to die when I saw it! But just like you say, it all washed out completely, she was able to see her quilting lines very easily, and I was impressed. But I guess I've still been to nervous to try it myself. I am inspired now! Especially want to try it on the grey hairs!!!!!! Ha!

No, actually, I didn't. I was more concerned about them washing out, so that's what I tested for. I do my hand quilting in a hoop so I need something that will stay on till the stitching is done. Because we have a dog and my DH and I smoke (I know-shame on me ops: ) I wash all my quilts after they're finished. The price is right, too, especially when school supplies go on sale.

I use my scanner to copy and my PC to size quilting designs just right and print them onto regular printer paper. Next, for med/dark colored fabrics, I rub soap heavily all over the wrong side of the paper ensuring that the quilt design is completely covered. For light colored fabrics I use a silver quilter's marking pencil instead. Then I use my tracing wheel to trace the design onto the quilt. One advantage is that the little dots made by the tracing wheel are evenly spaced and will help a handquilter evenly space the quilt stitiches.
