In my youth, I lived in the mid-west. I have been thru several tornados. At that time, we didn't have a 'warning' system.
I can remember spending many a time in the basement.
I also remember looking across the street at the houses that were completely gone. They were there when we went in the basement and gone by the time we came out.
    Fortunately, no lives were lost.

The spring of my freshman year at MSU, we had an especially bad tornado season. I lived in a 6 story dormitory. The week before finals, when everyone was freaking out, we spent at least 3 nights sitting on the hard floor of the basement of the dorm, packed in like sardines, waiting for the "all-clear." Needless to say, we had papers to write, studying to do, and more comfortable surroundings in our rooms. It was very frustrating.

One time, as we once again evacuated to the basement, someone looked out the stairwell window and saw the tornado! Word spread like wildfire. Goofy college students that we were, instead of heading quickly to the basement, everyone streamed outside to observe the funnel cloud which was, thankfully, still about a mile away.

Stupid? Yes. One of the most interesting experiences of my life? Absolutely yes! Would I do it again? Absolutely NOT! Have I warned my kids now at MSU about this? You bet!

It was about 5 miles from my home. Ann, I grabbed George who had been asleep and let me tell you he's a lot harder to carry than some hand-work!
Anyway, that seems like such a long time ago now... yesterday am my mom passed out while getting some meds at her oncologist & I ended up at the ER with her most of the day, tag-teamed w/ my sis who is there now, but I spent the night in a chair :x Anyway everything seems ok she was dehydrated from chemo-nausea and that sent her heart into fibrulation (?) So you know how hospitals are they do everything they can to keep you from sleeping  but the upside? I DID have my BOM with me & got lots done

Also, on the tornado topic, if you haven't heard Ricky's tornado story you really should. He is a sensational story-teller! I won't spoil it for you, best to hear it from him--yet another reason to attend the Super Seminar!

                  Florence,
I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. I hope she bounces back quickly.
To everyone in tornado country-please listen to the weather reports every morning before you do anything. I just heard on the news that in at least a couple of the places that were hit, the weather people had warned of possible sever weather.
Just be safe, that's the most important thing.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard how "Pine Needles" in Cedar Rapids is doing with all the flooding. If you remember, they were the lucky shop that won a visit from Alex.

The paper tonight had an article that said 3,000 homes were evacuated, a railroad bridge collapsed, and 100 blocks were under water. I don't know where the quilt shop is but it sure sounds awful for people there

Pine Needles is not near the downtown area of Cedar Rapids and I would think it is OK. I live on other side of the river and it is very hard to get from one side of town to the other. The only way is on the interstate. My son works on the other side of town and a trip that would have taken 15 - 20 minutes took him almost 2 hours.

There are areas of town that streams/creeks are going out of there banks but the major flooding is in our downtown area. Yes, It is more devistating than even the pictures show you on TV. You can go to http://www.KCRG.com to see all the coverage. We have some major buildings totally flooded - Police station, main fire station, sheriff's office, public library, National Slovac Museum. These places have water up to their rafters and beyond. There is one road across the river open and only one major road open into the city (from the north) and it's the same road. All other roads/bridges are closed.
