Look what I found, Ricky!
Last week at Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, this gorgeous quilt was part of the main show and won third prize in the 'Two Person' category. It's drop-dead gorgeous!! Here is what was said about it in the catalogue:
Elke Voelker-Kobusch & Manuela Schaenke (Longarm), Meerbusch, Germany
Mamandula
Machine-pieced, machine-appliquéd, longarm quilted.
"When I bought the book of Ricky Timms 'Rhapsody Quilts' I fell in love with this design. It was a challenge but I loved to do it.

I posted the whole comment because I think it's great that the two ladies are giving credit to Ricky. Unfortunately that doesn't always happen. Also, I bet this quilt will be exhibited at a few venues in Germany and other countries on the continent over the next couple of years. It really deserves to be seen. It stood out like a shining beacon. From the edge of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood

Stunning! Thank you for sharing it with such good pictures! I cannot believe someone took the time to satin stitch the entire quilt! I know Ricky uses an applique stitch (that's what my machine calls the look-alike button hole stitch) and that would go MUCH faster! I am assuming Ricky's work is turned (over Stable Stuff?) and perhaps this person had bonded hers and wanted the extra coverage/security on the edges. There is a LOT of work in that quilt! And, the quilting is beautiful!

Ricky's Rhapsody TQS episodes #803 and 804 show that he uses raw edges for his rhapsody appliques, and Steam-A-Seam II, not Stable Stuff, for this technique.

Margo is correct - I use fused raw edges - with a double blanket stitch (2.0 x 2.0, sometimes 1.8 x 1. 8) and it is not a fast technique. Curves and points take the most time. I've washed my competitive quilts and they are still in great shape. Lots of small, tight stitching holds things very well. I've seen others use a larger default stitch and they can fray or ravel.
