Teaching
Hello, I need some advice on how to write a proposal for teaching a class. I wear clothing and carry hand bags that I make and on several occasions quilt shop owners have asked me if I would like to teach a quilted handbag class and to just submit a proposal. I do already teach sewing to teens at a summer camp(the shop owners are on to me because I buy my class supplies from them). I have never had the need to write up a proposal for anyone, I was origionally hired by the camp to teach art and when they lost their sewing teacher several years ago they gave me that spot. I would love to teach an adult class but I don't know where to start in writing a class proposal.

I guess you would have to ask them exactly what they are looking for. When I had to fill one out for a local art camp they just wanted to know what I would be teaching about, what supplies the class would need to have and what kind of work area they would need (machines, electrical outlets, etc.).

If I were a shop owner I would also like to know what you plan to teach. Have sample of your written instructions. Offer a breakdown of what you will teach, supplies needed, what you would need as an instructor, etc .. I say this cause my GF who owns a shop found out the hard way.... A GOOD QUILTER DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKES A GOOD TEACHER.
YOU need to have a good communicating style and be able to get the information across. One way is to do a free workshop at the store... demo something simple but fun for customers..... I use to demo one seam flying geese at quilt shows and that resulted in request for other workshops/ and classes.

This is so true. I've taken 3 classes from a lady who is an amazing quilter. Watching her demo what she does is one thing but taking a class from her was another. I never finished anything as she piled too much into the time, the instructions were poorly written, one class she didn't have any instructions but when asked she took our email addresses and said she would send something...which she never did. I admire her work but she couldn't pass it on...IMHO. BTW I'm a former teacher so picked up on all the things I thought she should have done. She goes around to different LQS to teach and doesn't seem to stay teaching in each for very long...and I'm not surprised.Originally posted by LadyRagsA GOOD QUILTER DOES NOT NECESSARILY MAKES A GOOD TEACHER.TTFN from Judy
