Angie's Rhapsody quilt takes 3rd place @ guild quilt show!
Michigan quilter Angie Witting's Bohemian Rhapsody quilt took 3rd place in our guild's quilt show yesterday. It is absolutely gorgeous -- hand pieced and hand quilted. A photo of it is at my profile.
If Angie is a member, perhaps you can provide more details??

Somehow, I doubt Ricky is bothered by it, but perhaps I'm wrong.
I've always had the feeling Ricky hopes HIS work will inspire others to do their work.....and not everyone has the great feeling for color, proportion, etc. that Ricky does. As we spend more time in the art form, hopefully, we will begin to be courageous on our own. I kind of like the fact that she at least was confident enough to make the quilt - which is very detailed, and well executed.
Maybe I'm too naive. But as long as she gives credit to Ricky, isn't it ok?
I'd be interested in what others think. Without starting a war! I don't want to spawn anything uncomfortable here..........but I think of TQS forum as a place to exchange friendly ideas and opinions. I'd even like to see Ricky and Alex chime in if they have the time!

The original poster said it was hand appliqued and hand quilted. I know Ricky does it by machine. I think then it's not an exact replica. I'd like to think we can admire and appreciate the beauty and craftmanship of her quilt knowing she gave credit to Ricky. I too would really like to hear what Ricky has to say. Gloria

I would also like to know what Ricky thinks. The quilt is beautiful. I am not sure what the criteria is for quilt shows as far as copying someone else's quilt. I would be flattered if someone copied one of my quilts of course that will never happen I can't even figure out how to post my picture's. I got one on and the rest are floating around in cyber space somewhere.

Angie's label at the quilt show totally gave credit to Ricky for the inspiration and the pattern. I'm not sure if this quilt is an exact replica or not. Obviously, with her hand applique, it is not 100% exactly the same, but lots of us use different methods of applique to recreate patterns we see in books, etc. It's not deceptive.
And I don't think it's creepy at all. I think this quilt was made as a tribute to Ricky's quilt, which inspired her, and not as a rip-off. After all, all of us use quilt patterns from others and incorporate ideas from the works of others into our own quilts. It's called learning and inspiration.

I think it is perfectly fine for someone to copy a spectacular quilt, as long as it is properly labled and the quilter gives credit to whomever made the original. It is a tribute to the original designer that someone would want to recreat what they made. I remember reading a book on antique quilts and there was a whole chapter talking about how quilt patterns would "travel" - a quilter would see a quilt at a fair or exhibition they really liked, they would sketch it or maybe just go wholly from memory, and when they returned home they would make thier own version. This is how virtually all your "public domain" blocks got their start, as well as many motifs we see in applique. I specifically remember one page where they showed something like four quilts, all from different regions and all closely resembling each other - they were all quilters inspired by a quilt they had seen at a state fair that year.

I feel the need to weigh in on this topic. As long as the maker of the reproduction quilt is careful to acknowledge the source of the design, I don't see anything wrong in making such a beautiful tribute to the original.
The Dear Jane quilts are a famous example of quilts reproducing the work of another designer. Some quilters try to faithfully reproduce Jane Stickle's work and others vary the fabrics and/or layout greatly. All of them seem to me to be paying tribute to the original design. and every quilt of this type that I have seen has acknowledged the source of inspiration for the design.
There are Rhapsody quilts appearing in many of the quilting magazines, and I suspect that makes Ricky very proud that so many quilters are using his concept.

When you go to quilt shows, do they not sell kits that resemble the quilt exactly. I really do not believe that anyone should take offense. Isn't that a form of flattery. Personally, if you make your label with the name of your kit or whom you are honoring, what is the big deal. Isn't it why he is teaching. Enjoy the moment. Green with envy  I am. Beautiful Quilt, thank you for sharing. Debbie
