Karma... Other than the good karma and bad karma

    John,

Can you tell me about Karma please? What is the scale all about? How does this effect our profile and TQS?

    Please share.

Here is the explanation from Kunena, which powers this forum:

"The karma system is one of those neat little things that contributes to the community aspect of a website by empowering you to give feedback to those who deserve it. It is a tool you can use to show appreciation or disapproval for anything that another member has done.

Maybe you posted for help on how to do something and got such a swift and helpful response from another member that you want to show appreciation in more than just words. You can applaud them by giving them Karma. Perhaps another member responded to that same post negatively offering no help and unnecessarily making you look foolish when you genuinely needed help. You can smite them by take away Karma. However, should you smite someone, you should follow that up with a message to an admin or moderator and let them know just in case there is a larger issue.

Please use the karma system responsibly. Don't abuse it by artificially inflating someone's karma or waging a personal war against someone by reducing their karma unnecessarily. If abuse is detected the karma system will be shut off as it is not a necessity.

The karma controls are located in the top, right of each post we make in the forum. The '+' sign adds karma and the '-' takes it away. You cannot adjust your own karma. "
Note: The Karma buttons are located under your avatar and member info. You can only give Karma once every six hours (I guess that's so no one goes on a Karma bestowing binge, LOL).

Hey Clara, I have just given you some Karma for your new profile photo. :cheer: The Karma is still a mystery to us all. You can only give somebody Karma every 6 hours - don't know why. But it hasn't stopped us from playing with it anyway.

But you don't know who has given or taken away Karma, I like the thank you box it shows on the post and is more meaningful. That's a good addition

Well I could definitely live without the Karma feature. We are not the kind of people to be abusive or deliberately unhelpful here. I like the thank you button too, that works for me.

I much prefer a "like" button like we have on Facebook (which we can do on the community page). I see no reason for giving anyone negative Karma. Much better to ignore something negative than to contribute to stirring up trouble. I wish TQS would rethink this option.

                Rita and Sherry,
Well said. I agree with you both. Thank you.

Well we could just ignore it an hope it goes away  .

The 'thank you' button is good, other ones could be 'ditto/I second that opinion/I agree' as well as 'like'.

Hmmm.... I do like philosophical musings. My guess is that karma, a philosophical concept in several eastern religions (bhuddism, hinduism) is something affected by one's actions and is a sort of universival phenomena. Good actions bring on good karma and vice versa. "Selflessness" is another concept in those religions, it relates to an act that expects no recognition. For example, when you "like" something on facebook, other people can see that you liked it and you may receive some self satisfaction from that recognition. In contrast, bestowing good karma points brings the bestower no recognition and is therefore a "selfless" act. Hopefully we will not see much smiting or giving of negative karma points because I think most quilters are kind and generous people and would not behave in a way to make others want to smite them. ;-)

IMHO....I understand the intent of Karma...but I feel it can lead to unintended unhappy feelings when
used here in such a widely received forum. I don't think it belongs here. It is unnecessary !! Where
as a nice "Thank you or a "Like" or a "Thumbs up" Carries only positive thought and encouragement.
I don't think it improves anything here and plan to not use it . IMHO

Well, something for everyone. Several votes here for not liking it, there could be others who feel differently. It's one of those things I will probably not pay much attention to.

I'm not keen on this 'karma' thing. I think it's unnecessary.
But I love the 'thank you' button.
