    Alaska quilt shops?

to celebrate our 40th anniversary, we will be going on a cruise in June to Alaska. (Yes, I know that Alaska is not really "international," but it is exotic - at least for us Michiganders!)

We will be seeing Anchorage, Denali, Talkeetna, Alyeska, Juneau, Skagway, icy Straights, Ketchikan, Vancouver.

Any quilt shops we should visit along the way?

http://alaskaquiltzone.com/ Quilt Zone. I was there last summer and this is a great shop.

http://www.quiltedravenalaska.com/ The Quilted Raven. Another great shop. This one is a block and a half from the Visitors Center in downtown Anchorage.

http://www.quiltree.com/ The Quilt Tree is in midtown Anchorage.

http://www.akseams.com/contact-us.htm Seams Like Home is another one in midtown Anchorage.

I've been to the ones above. I lived there for 5 years and now I go back almost every summer. If you google "quilt shops in AK" you'll find at least one in most of the towns you'll be visiting.

DH and I took that cruise 13 years ago for our honeymoon and it was great. Have an awesome trip. I think you'll love it.

      Thanks - will do!

Is there anything unique to Alaskan quilting I should be looking for?

There are some fabrics with Alaskan themes/motifs (flowers, animals, northern lights, totems, native Alaskan designs, etc) There's a very well known watercolor painter, Barbara Lavalle, that has designed fabrics and quilt patterns. Here's a sample http://www.quiltedravenalaska.com/Ca...ductID=2577454
If you're in Anchorage on a weekend, make sure you go to The Saturday Market. Lots of vendors with wonderful Alaskan art, food, crafts, etc.

I lived in Fairbanks from 1976 to 1980. There were no quilt shops. We did not even have a Walmart. I can't remember where I bought fabric back then. Maybe there was a Ben Franklin. Maybe they sold fabric at the base exchange? Just can't remember.
My favorite thing was the Northern Lights. Not visible in June! Don't forget your insect repellent (VERY necessary). Have lots of fun. I hope you get to see lots of wildlife.
