UK - FOQ - Guild Fundraiser

I've just talked to a friend and we both said that we really must make it a priority to get to the fundraising stall at FoQ early this year. I did last year, but my friend waited and when she finally got around to go, it was closed because they had run out of the tombola prizes.

Last year you could win a bag, anything from tiny purses to huge totes, donated by guild members. I was lucky and went home with three gorgeous ones. Excellent result from buying 5 tickets. This year guild members have been asked to make little quilts (A4 size). It'll be fun to see if I can't liberate one and give it a good home.

FoQ? Tombola? What language are you speaking, Lorchen?

FoQ is our Festival of Quilts and a tombola is a raffle, you know you buy tickets and then the numbers are either pulled out of a barrel or they can correspond to a prize with the same number on it.

She is speaking proper English Anne.

Proper English? Me? You must be joking! I'm a German dyslexic who somehow ended up living in the UK.

Hehehehe.... What a fun experience for you, Amo. The Germans don't know about "QWERTY".

When I was still teaching German I had a laptop that was set up with the European keyboard for word processing text in German. I found it easier (and faster) to use than the UK/US keyboard.

Ahhh. That was my mistake. I'm most fluent in Canadian English. Though, thanks to my Yorkshire-born MIL, I DO know what slopholes are!

I hesitate to ask what slopholes are - my first language is southern (UK) english - the Yorkshire folk speak a completely different language   . I'll have to ask one of my pals "oop north" to translate

I asked my god-daughter (Yorkshire born and bred) and she has never heard of 'slopholes'. Ali, I think we should consider taking an adult ed. class in 'Yorkshire-Speak'.

Maybe it's an expression used only by the older generation. According to my MIL, slopholes are puddles.

The first time I heard her mother use the word, she pronounced it (lemme see if I can spell this phonetically) "slahpwulls."

It used to take me a couple of weeks to get used to Granny's way of speaking whenever she came to visit. But as a result, I was able to actually understand what everyone was saying in the movie Brassed Off!

Anne in Vancouver, Canada, where we just call 'em puddles. God knows what my Cockney grandfather called them!
