Just to second what Lois has been saying (thanks, Lois, for taking care of me!) --
I can no longer get to any part of the TQS site from Iceweasel (a Firefox browser) on my Debian Linux work laptop or from Firefox on my personal Windows 8 laptop. I get the error message that Lois gave you any time I try. I have emptied the cache on both laptops and have rebooted the work laptop several times. I have no problems getting to any other Web site on either of these browsers. I'm now limited to accessing the TQS site using Chrome on my personal Windows 8 laptop. I will not be wasting any more of my time on this or accessing any part of the Web site beyond the Forum and the shows. And if I lose access from Chrome, I will be asking for my membership fee back since I won't be able to access the site from anywhere at that point, so it doesn't matter how good the content is.
I guess my suggestion would be don't fix an anticipated problem with something that doesn't work......
(Or maybe I just need to learn how to use the site..... )

Lois - I see Maureen's Birthday Event is now listed as a 'Past Event' and you can no longer join it. That might be the cause of the error. If you don't mind, try going to a current Event and see if you can join and let me know if you get an error message on that. Personally, I don't think it should be considered a 'past event' on the day of the event. I'll ask Bob if that is fixable.
Events are announcements. It's there as a reminder for something coming up.
If you join, then there is an option for attendees to send emails to all the participants.
It will appear on 'My Events' if you go to Events in the All Groups section.
