        Beautiful and innovative, Charae!

Renata, can you post a close-up of the binding treatment? I can't quite see what was done and I'm intrigued. Thanks!!

          Nancy,
I'll let Charae explain it if I'm getting it wrong, but it looks like she put the backing on right-side to right, stitched around three quarters of the mug rug, turned it inside out, stitched the whole thing closed and then stitched a pretty, golden trim to the front of the mug rug. Very pretty and perfect for this delicate fabric and shape of the mug rug.

Renata has described the binding treatment perfectly, but I had several false starts before I finally did it this way. I first made a traditional quilt sandwich, quilted it, then tried to use a thicker gold cording as a trim. It had the slightly bolder look I wanted and I could cover the edges just fine, but I could not end it without a very noticeable lump when I used fray check or tape to prevent raveling. Overlapping was also unsightly--much too bulky! I made several attempts to meet the ends exactly, but the feed dog movement and zig zag stitch opened a small gap when approached from either direction or side. So, I stopped trying to fight the "perfect cording". I remade it all, did an "envelope binding" so the raw edges of the quilt sandwich were covered, quilted it then zig zagged some decorative wire ribbon on top. Easy peasy, but I made things as hard as possible and had several challenges before getting there!

Thanks for the binding pictures and descriptions, Charae and Renata! I really appreciate your descriptions of what worked and what didn't. I've had the same problems with a couched cord binding, so I'm glad to hear that it's not just me. I need to try other edge treatments, so your explanations are a big help. A possible technique for the new CW challenge....
