That does seem like a tough picture to start from. And what a huge difference at the end! The last looks like whole cloth quilt with waves and a sun quilted on it.
I've been working on my reels quilt. I have the applique pieces all ironed on and now I am stitching them all down.
Today we went to Newmarket for their open day. We went to a couple stables and saw the horses, the horse racing museum and to Rowley Mile race track to look around. Unfortunately it was cold and wet today. Still a nice day out.

Wow! The 2012 Challenge went quite a distance from the beginning to the end! It's cool that a traditional pieced quilt made it in there. I hadn't thought of doing something like that, but it makes sense. I'm getting excited for my turn!
As for my time, I've been watching the video lessons for Cindy Needham's "Design It -- Quilt It", Angela Walters' "Machine Quilting Negative Space" and Carol Ann Waugh's "Stupendous Stitching" classes on craftsy.com. I also did all of the first week exercises for the Step On Pins Photoshop Elements class. Using what I've learned in Cindy Needham's class, I'm designing a wholecloth quilt that has an angel in the center. This will be a Christmas gift for my mom in 2013. I also started stitching a small wholecloth quilt based on one of Cindy's exercises that will end up being a gift for my friend's 50th birthday at the beginning of Nov. I've pulled fabric for an angel quilt for my mom for this Christmas. I'll be using a Cynthia England pattern that I've had for a while. I'll probably start stitching on that at our 4-day quilt retreat next weekend. And I made a new pair of flannel jammie pants this morning to keep me warm at night.

Well...passing the time this weekend wishing for smoke-free skies and perhaps a bit of wind and rain...wind
to blow the smoke away! and rain to help dampen down the fires. It has been UGLY...and I know..we aren't
alone in this....our worst came express from central Washington ! AND we are getting a break today...cool
with a few sprinkles....smells wonderful!!
Windows are open and housecleaning a bit....
rather be sewing !
Here's sun setting a couple of nites ago ! the day before we couldn't see the sun at all !

It is so much fun to see the difference from start to finish with the Chinese Whispher quilts. As I look at the beginning of this thread and the rules it refers to the photo as "the photo used for inspiration". So I am assuming your quilt is merely that what you are inspired to do first from the photo and then from the quilt you recieve. I wonder how I will be inspired. I hope I am not stumped.
Marilyn, So glad the weather is improving and the air quality is beginning to improve.

Marilyn, So glad the weather is starting to cooperate, hopefully it'll be nice and clear soon.
No wonder the competition is called Chinise Whispers  Seen the photo and the quilts that resulted from it just proofs that everyone's perception is unique. Thak you for sharing Maureen.
Welcome back Wendy! So glad your "hanging out" with us again.
Sounds like everybody is staying busy. DH was home for 6 days, after 9 weeks being at work, gone again for a couple of weeks. He'll be back next Wednesday for another week and after that it'll be back to his "normal" 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off schedule! (happy dance here). Slowly been finishing the extra blocks for the sampler and getting ready to put the inner borders and sashing. Slowly also working on a couple of other projects, watching some TQS videos and the new class on fusing. Dyed 7 more yards of fabric. I needed to use some leftover dye I'd kept in the refrigerator in sealed canning jars. It turned aout beautiful, if I may say so myself. There was one yard where I was trying to make a "variegated" sky kind of thing so, I used purple and orange.   when I was ready to rinse it looked awful. But, oh! Surprise! Is actually my favorite fabric from this batch, it turned out into some great burgundy, peach, with some hints of green, yellow and blue, almost like a red maple forest at fall time with some sunshine and sky picking thru (hope this makes sense)
Here are a couple of photos.
Full yard- looks "purplier" in the photo, more burgundy in person.

Great idea about using Marilyn's photo to get the creative cranks and gears oiled. I think I know what I'd do if that were it. Maybe I can do this! I sure hope so!Originally posted by crocus999Thanks for the picture,Marilyn, maybe inspiration to practice on?
And, dear Lois, to paraphrase you: we all have more creativity than we think...or similar. Wise words! You'll won't get stumped. you won't get stumped. you won't get stumped.

Actually, I'm not in the Whispers, but I like that photo enough to try to do something with it. And the posts with the pics from the Loch Loman show really gives an good idea of the 'license' for creativity . I would be my first 'art' quilt.
As for dying, I am hearing so much about it that I've already started wondering about it. I guess there must be a topic on the forum about it. My first question is: What fabric do you start with????
