Yes Barbara it is called a bodkin I use mine for so many things. I love Eleanor Burns applique method with the milk shake straw and bodkin, for other things I use a cuticle stick sometimes I stick one end in a pencil sharpener and sometimes I cut the end off blunt. For very thin like spaghetti straps I pull threads from the machine then start sewing the threads are attached and you can pull the strip inside out. Margo have I explained it right? There are so many do dads made for other purposes that work. Necessity is the mother of invention. Joan

What is a bodkin? When I tried the straw trick yesterday I used a wooden scewer.

Gee whiz! Thank you every one! I've got the straw and I have a cutical stick! Actually, the cutical stick is already in my sewing room for turning placemats, luggage tags, etc. And, it looks like it will fit down my straw just fine. And, I had never heard of a bodkin before! You learn something new every day on TQS!

AND, CONGRATULATIONS TO TERRY! Way to go, girl!

When dressmaking I always used a knitting needle to start a truning a tube of fabric through. I have always used a bodkin, a thick needle with a round point and large eye, to sew together a knitted garment.

Congratulations Terry, We all want to see photos, everyone photos please.
Thank you everyone for all your kind words, I will surely pass them on to the quilt recipients.
I am planning on doing a letter to each recipient with the story of the SotTTs.
This has been an awesome experience for me and all your messages have gotten me through some tough times these last few months, more to come too. I feel like I have lots of friends around the world, I would love to go to the US to one of your wonderful quilt shows.
On Saturday I went to a trunk show, one of the top quilters here in North Queensland showed all her wonderful quilts, bags, etc. etc. to a group of us. Her name is Ruth Bloomfield and she has won some awards at Houston and other shows in the US. It was wonderful to be able to see and touch her works, she will be having some workshops here soon, can't wait to go to some of these.
                        Cheers to all,
                        Louise

Wow! Was I ever surprised to see ribbons on my entries at the Sandy Quilt show yesterday!!! Thank you Shirley for posting the news about my ribbons and a special thank you to those who requested photos. Below are two photos.

This was my entry in the hand applique and machine quilted category; I called it Woodland Flower and it was awarded a third place:

You can read a brief description about it in my profile by clicking here:

This was my entry in the group category; it was too large for me to get a photo of the whole quilt. The border you see at the bottom, is repeated at the top. I named this quilt, Pinwheel Buzz and it was awarded a second place:

I won these blocks from two different BOMs in two different years through my quilt guild. I had no idea how I was going to put them together until I took a workshop from Sharyn Craig and then it took me another year to get the project finished. It is a full bed sized quilt. It is free motion quilted with butterflies, dragon flies and different sized spider webs. It is going to be auctioned off next spring at an Elks club to raise money for scholarships for high seniors planning to attend college.

This quilt was entered in the table decor category. I called it "Whispering Pines" and it won first place.

This quilt was entered in the art quilt category. I called it "Grandmother's Flowers" and it won first place.

You can read more about it at this link:

I tried lots of firsts in the project and had so much fun with it. It represents flower gardens that my grandmothers' grew.
