Here's a great lay-out for HSTs. Of course using different lights and darks will make it look different from this one with the controlled background and matching stars....but still...it's a great lay-out! If not for your exchange HSTs, maybe you are having so much fun you want to make a whole quilt out of your own fabric!

I think I just might send some of my HSTs back to Austin with you after sort day and then send some along to Margo...and then you can both make my quilts for me...cool 8) idea, huh?

It's called a Ribbon Star and is a very old design. The photo is one I saw on another web site, but a Google search turned up these directions:

The following is just another way of making HSTs, in case you don't have enough with the exchange. I found this tute on the Missouri Quilt Co., for Pin Wheels. Cut 2 sqares, place right sides together and sew 1/4 inch seam allowance on all 4 sides. Then make 2 cuts, diagonally corner to corner, and Voila, 4 HSTs. I love this method, wish I had seen it when making my exchange HSTs. Good luck all, Kutnso

Unless you cut the squares on the bias, your resulting HSTs will have BIAS grain lines on all four sides!! Be aware that they will not be stable!Originally posted by Mona80The following is just another way of making HSTs, in case you don't have enough with the exchange. Thank you for not using this method for the exchange!

Looking for quilting ideas to use your HSTs in? Elsie Campbell has a new book! Here is her TQS profile: community/my-profile/LCCampbell
and you can see her on TQS Episode 407
Here is an e-mail I got from her today:
Squares and Triangles book is here! Get your copy now for 20% off during this pre-release sale. I have plenty of books in stock right now, so no waiting for shipment!
Regular price: $19.95
Sale price: $15.96 until May 1, 2011.
I so enjoyed making the quilts that are patterned in the book and I think you will, too. There are so many things I've discovered over the years that makes quilt making quick, easy, and precise from the beginning of the process. I've included in this book some of my techniques for accurate cutting of strips and squares, tips for improving stitching and pressing, one method for fusible appliqué, how I use freezer paper for mitering corners and how I apply bindings completely by machine. The how-to pages are accompanied by more than 60 clear photographs and easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions. I included hints for making perfect 4-patch and 9-patch blocks and 3 different ways to make lots of perfect half-square triangle units.
All 13 easy-to-make quilt patterns include color, full-page photographs of each quilt, clear instructions and diagrams. I've also provided a list of resources where you can find the products I suggest in the book.
Thanks for your interest in my work. I think you will have lots of fun making your own versions of these Squares and Triangles quilts.
Elsie M. Campbell
My web site can be found at: http://elsiemcampbell.com/ Watch for my new scrap quilt book "Square and Triangles" on or about May 1, 2011.

I just ordered Elsie Campbell's book from her website. Looks like a super book! I loved the two patterns that she showcases in the book info/description link! One of these may be perfect for my HST's. Thanks for posting about this book Else and Margo! You are so helpful at all times and that's why I love TQS because the people are so great and friendly!Lesley

Thanks Lesley! Let us know how you like the book and if you think the designs will work with our HST exchanges!
EDITED: Here is a smile box showing the patterns in the book: http://secure.smilebox.com/ecom/open..._playback_link
It looks like there are more quilts that use squares, but I like the cover quilt with triangles!
