What a terrific map and what an education for us all! Aren't maps misleading? Trip planning...oh, that's only half an inch on the map, we can be there in a few hours...NOT

Jill, I loved seeing the map too. I knew Australia was large, and the map put it in context for us. Hope to get their one day. Thanks!

Jill, my son works in Melbourne and lives an hour on the train in Frankston.
My husband ..daughter and I have been to Australia 5 times and have only seen Sydney,Canberra, Melbourne and Tasmania.
It seems alot but that is such a small amount of Oz
People don't realise that to get around Oz you have to fly and that is really expensive, I'm afraid my flying days are over.
I would love to do a trip on the Gann.
I will be 75 this month and 21 hours in a tin can is more than I could manage.
It's a wonderful but vast country.
My son has lived there for 19 years and I still miss him.

I wish we could superimpose a map of the USA to scale on that map to gain further understanding of the distances we all relate to in our daily lives. I wouldn't have a clue how to do that but i am very curious about what I might learn by looking at such an image.

                      Thanks everyone.

Also people do arrive in Alice Springs and ask the way for a walk to Ayers Rock/Uluru...............BUT its 450km or 260 miles away from Alice Springs.

Anne it is so hard when our children live so far away, our daughter lived in London for a few years so I feel for you.

I just did a web search and found this:

You have to be careful when comparing maps of these large areas because how they look will depend on the underlying map projection. From what I found, Australia is 2.97 million sq miles while the continental US is 3.12 million square miles.

Ha! and by one reference, Europe has 3,930,000 sq mi, and which countries are included and in what year was the data compiled. The plot thickens.

Those are great visuals! My German/Canadian friends explained that what causes problems is the maps of the US & the European countries are in an atlas on the same size pages of paper.

I live in Michigan and so many people do not realize how large the Great Lakes are.

Carol, especially when you think in terms of the Great Lakes having islands and ship wrecks.
