    Old machines

I spent the weekend with my DD and family. While there, I cleaned and oiled her 3 old Singers. She has recently received two featherweights, and a model 201. We had fun piecing blocks for charity quilts. I just amazes me how well they sewed! Like new, after 60 years! It made me wonder if any product made today will be workable in 60 years.

DD is going to teach quilting to some of the girls in her homeschool group, so she has the machines ready to go. They will all be wanting their own featherweight when they are finished.

    Lorra,
I think it's great that your DD wants to share her knowledge with her friends! We've got to keep reaching out and bringing more quilters into the fold.

Cathy I agree with you about the Featherweight. I have one that belonged to my MIL and it is so lovely to work with. I don't know if my new Janome Horizon will still be working so well after 60 years but I hope so. The thing I wonder about is whether we will have any electricity to run our machines by then.

Love it, love it, love it!

We must pass some of these skill on to our next generations or they will be lost forever! And then they will never know the pure JOY of creating something with their OWN hands!

With the world coming to an end on 21st Dezember 2012, TV shows regarding Armageddon, meteorite 'attacks', etc etc have been accumulating... If we believe them, we certainly won't have electricity for our wonder-machines in 60 years time... If we are still here to operate them that is :!: :!: :!:
Well, I choose not to believe it... And if for a change one of these prophesies actually does come true, I still have my grandmum's old treadle machine, a cupboard or two of candles and more fabric and thread than I can use up in this lifetime... I'll be spending the end of the world as we know it, sitting in my living room sewing quilts - as any survivors will be needing something to keep warm and to give a huggy comfort

Lotti, I have a treadle too. I is in the corner of the living room, just waiting for some attention. It sews perfectly. I have a couple of other machines that were originally treadles, but converted to electric so I guess I could convert them back. I will be sewing comfortably too. A wood stove to keep me warm, and the tea kettle hot! Anyone want to visit you'll be welcome!

I'll have to come visit you. I'm completely electricity-bound.

I found what appears to be a duplicate of an old machine which a friend gave me......cabinet/case and all. I don't know anything about it..........except the cabinet is in good shape and it appears I need a new belt for it.

Lynn, it looks beautiful. Such a detailed case too. I bet it would work if it was oiled and had a new belt. I am not familier with that brand, but it is pretty. Would be fun to see if it works.

Lovely looking machine Lynn. I think they are all fixable - it's the ones with the computers that are difficult to fix once they are gone. I have my grandmother's treadle foot singer machine and a stove for heat and boiling a kettle so you can all come to my place when Cathy runs out of food.
