Inspiration??

For years there has been no snow (I don't count anything less than 1/8 of an inch) during the whole of winter in this part of the UK. But last year and this year...... We have had so much snow this week that everything came to a standstill and the local school were closed for three days. One of the days was amazing (and most unusual for England). The temperature outside was well below freezing but there was brilliant sunshine for a few hours. The light was stunning. I should have absorbed all that beauty and turned it into a quilt. But I have a heavy cold and so just wrapped myself up in a quilt and read a book.

Lorchen, That's a wonderful way to treat a cold...wrap up in a quilt and read a book. Feel better...quilt later.

Karen, I had the opportunity to buy a whole set of books by Caroline Lawrence recently. The price was ridiculously low. I asked our school librarian if we have them in school, and the answer was 'no'. These books are intended for children. There are 17 in the series. Every one of them can be read on its own, but the characters really come to life if you start with the first one and read them in sequence. They are called 'The Roman Mysteries' (they are historical detective stories with children as the main characters) and are fictional but historically pretty accurate. The first one is called 'The Thieves of Ostia'. I'm reading though the whole bunch and once I have finished with one I hand it over to the librarian for our school library. Thanks to the bad weather and closed school I have now reached volume 10 and so far have loved every one of them. I like to check out what's available for teenagers.

Lorchen, I think a lot of the best fiction out there is written for children/young adults. I think I'll look into The Roman Mysteries for my grandson (reading them first, of course).

Betty Jo, I have never given a book to anybody that I didn't read first myself . And I often give it with a quilted bookmark that somehow matches the theme of the book.

snow, snow, snow. When we lived in Minnesota USA and dh plowed snow all winter, it never looked like inspiration. Just more work and agravation as we drove any where. Now a number of years into retirement and seeing almost no snow ever. ( One aberration when we had a snow fall in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas on Christmas Eve - the first in over 100 yrs.) We often look at snow pictures with some admiration (mine more than dh because he still remembers plowing the stuff.) So enjoy your snow and I hope we do not see any in our southern Texas Valley.
